It seems as though NU is not messing around. Too bad they couldn't take out more of that awful YMCA building.

It probably has to do with the history of the building... it's on the National Register of Historic Places if I remember correctly.

Given the precarious finances of the Y, give it another decade and NU will be able to buy it and do a facadectomy.

I live in one of the rooms in the Hastings wing that overlook the construction site. The concrete wall appears to be the back wall of the new YMCA gym building. The crews on the dorm have been working at a good clip to get the basement finished -- there's lots of rebar and concrete pouring going on right now.

I was looking at the plans for the building the other day and it appears that I'll be able to wave to my new neighbors about five feet beyond my window, unless I end up with a blank wall to stare out at.

I'm new here, so I'll post some pics when I figure out how to do that properly.

From my window overlooking the construction site...

The retaining wall in the middle of the pic is apparently the back wall of the new YMCA building. Not a lot of space between it and the GrandMarc.



And most of the basement of the GrandMarc; they've made a lot of progress in the past week.

OxBlue runs a 24 hour construction cam (freeze capture) for numerous construction sites across the country. And the video was made from their cam. If someone searches for OxBlue + name of contractor and/or project, someone may find the cam. I tried a quick search and didn't.

I'm still wondering if NEU is going to make any investment in the Hastings building now that they own it. (It's the brick building you see with all the windows.) Lots of the wood windows are rotting out and the interiors above the first floor are pretty run down. It has some huge, gorgeous steel staircases that are hidden behind fire doors and triple sash windows that are mostly covered up by lowered ceilings (and leaking if my ceiling is representative of other rooms).

Has anyone heard anything about NEU's intentions toward this building?

I've read through this thread and with all of the changes to this site am I correct in saying this is going to be a Northeastern dorm? Anybody have up-to-date renders?

All that article references is the Medeiros Program staying in the building... nothing about whether NU plans to do any improvements to the building in the short-term. Which, I assume, means they won't.

I read somewhere that the original Grandmarc plan included demolition of the Hastings wing, but along the line that got scuttled.

I'm thinking that concrete wall and those beams are going to be for the new gym for the Y. There's still a -lot- of space left onsite.
