Now that the Union Square branch is operational and the Medford Branch is planned to open in a few months, I really hope that attention eventually turns toward advocating for future extensions. As for the Green Line itself, GLX should be a stepping stone for new rapid transit lines and branches that communities north of Boston need and deserve. Ideas such as extensions to Mystic Valley Parkway (and potentially even further), Porter Square (and hopefully Watertown afterwards), Everett/Chelsea, and Grand Junction light rail are all now possibilities since GLX was a prerequisite to all of those projects.
I was very pleased to hear things such as GLX to Mystic Valley Parkway, GLX to Porter Square, Commuter Rail electrification, and the NSRL mentioned by various politicians during the grand opening ceremony yesterday. The Green Line extension hopefully marks the start of a new era for the MBTA, and the momentum for transit expansion needs to continue growing.
