Harvard - Allston Campus

Wait, wut?! "The site could also eventually feature a 35-acre air-rights development over the highway and rail yard that would both mask the railroad presence and “knits the neighborhood together,” Harvard said in its August presentation."

that's in harvard's 500-year master plan... after theyve actually seized control of all land within 128 and overtaken all local governments...

It'll all be one gigantic air rights deck.

According to BBJ, BRA approved this $17 million project, on Western Ave, west of the former WGBH building, now Harvard's Innovation Lab.

15,000-square-foot “Life Lab” on its Allston campus. The Harvard Life Lab aims to capitalize on the success of the adjacent Harvard Innovation Lab and provide wet lab and shared laboratory space for Harvard-related life sciences and biotech startups

That's over $1,000 a sq ft, for no excavation, on land that Harvard owns.

Think that's the old New England Book Depository on the left, and I'm guessing that's to be incorporated into this "Life Lab".

They got some pushback from the board on the 5-10 year life span of the use, but obviously, it was approved.

They also said they expect to be at next month's meeting presenting the science and engineering complex and the renovation of the soldier's field housing ( http://www.huhousing.harvard.edu/our-properties/soldiers-field-park-apartments ).

Chao center is awkward. Trying too hard to be classical and modern at the same time, failing at both.

Agreed. I wonder if the architect got lost on the UMass Amherst campus and was inspired to mash together the 1960s Student Union entrance with the wings of Morrill III Labs...albeit with a 2016 polish.

So why does this cost over a $1,000 a sq ft?

Apparently because the building and contents will be moved, en toto, in 5-10 years.

The red brick New England Book Depository is not part of the project, though the perspective looking west on Western Ave., might have given the impression, as well as the cost number.
