I hope it's okay that I've posted this thread here. I'm in the process of updating a guidebook about the Freedom Trail and I'm looking for some good, inside tips on what to do and maybe what NOT to do. Do you all have any good tips for me?

Mayor: Not a bad idea, but my deadline doesn't allow me to visit them all this time around! If anyone's got a list...if not, that may have to be "research" for the next edition. Definitely somethin' to keep in mind!

Ron: This is not Charles Bahne's guidebook, but a different one. Originally written by Robert Booth and then updated by a few other people and eventually into my hands. My name is Cindi Pietrzyk.

My serious advice is: avoid it. Hit all the stops by an alternate route, seeing different parts of the city that the tourist trail doesn't normally traverse. Considering most visitors have to backtrack along it at some point anyway (how else to get back from Charlestown or the North End?) I think it makes a worthwhile suggestion for at least part of a tour of the city.

Yep - and that suggestion should be prominently featured in the guidebook if it isn't already. Directions from the trail to the 92 and 93 buses in Charlestown could also be useful for some tourists.

"Don't bother" was honestly my advice too.

I agree on stressing the MBTA ferry to Charlestown though. It's a fun ride and a cool way to see the city skyline.

Totally forgot about the ferry. Can throw a "it's cheaper than the whale watches at Long Wharf, and you're more likely to see something interesting" line in the book too.

And if the tourist buys a 7-day MBTA pass for $15, that includes the ferry.

If your Freedom Trail guide has the Dreams of Freedom Immigration Museum in it, on Milk Street -- take that out, as it closed several years ago. Some of the exhibits are now in the Prudential Skywalk.

Hi all! I need to come into the city and do the last half of the Trail. I didn't really want to park under the Commons again because it seems so far from north end of the Trail (I know it's only 2.5 miles, but it seems long with two little kids!, especially when we have to backtrack to the car...). Should I park up near Bunker Hill or the Constitution? I think I'd like to experience the Ferry, am I better off trying to park near the Ferry and then ride it over to the Constitution? Or, is there no good parking there?

You can park at the Aquarium Garage and take the ferry from Central Wharf (it goes right between the aquarium and Long Wharf, I think) to the Navy Yard.

Make sure the visitors know that the "food" served at the Union Oyster House and Durgin Park is swill not fit for an Arkansas piggery.

?? The Union Oyster House has pretty good food. I wouldn't call it sub-par by any means. It's not really outstanding, but there's no grounds to slander it.

*Booths are just uber claustrophobic.

Toby, if you posted to Yelp, I might actually stop ridiculing Yelp.

I've only heard good things about Union Oyster House (well, not rave reviews, but it's supposedly decent). But I can say with first hand experience that Durgin Park is crap.

Isn't being crappy and rude Durgin Park's very schtick?
