Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

It seems that MassPort only wants international flights to arrive in the newly renovated Terminal E. According to the talk down here in Atlanta, Delta Airlines, now that they had a spiffy new Terminal A at Logan, wanted to begin international flights out of Logan but using their new terminal A for both arrivals and departures using a section of the terminal for US customs. This makes sense in terms of ease of connecting flights on Delta without changing terminals but MassPort said NO...all international arrivals must use Terminal E. Delta now uses Kennedy and Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta for the majority of their international service which is certainly a loss for Logan.

I wonder if anyone has heard anything that goes like this...

JetBlue is clearly setting up to have 150 flights a day into terminal C and they are working with Massport to connect, security side, to Terminal E. Once complete, it will make a lot of sense an international hub at Logan using Jetblue and it codeshare partners to international destinations.

Delta can see this happening and might want to renew discussions with Massport about an international terminal at Terminal A as it was originally planned and built to handle but then was not pursued during the great recession.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Delta and jetbluedon't have any codeshares and aren't part of the same alliance (Jblue isn't in an alliance) so i don't really think thats really too likely.

I heard from someone that does a lot of Boston-Brazil travel. Currently, United via Houston is his route, but he said he heard JetBlue may be positioning to penetrate deeper into LatAm prior to the world cup and olympics. I don't think JetBlue's fleet could justify a direct from Boston or even New York, but Boston-Orlando-Rio> United/US Air/ American connecting alternatives.

Anyone else hear anything about this?

No idea, but they do have 30 larger planes lined up starting 2013.

JetBlue doesn't have a plane either in their fleet right now that could do a BOS/JFK-Brazil run. They push their 320s to the max as is.

American as is carriers a good amount of Boston-South American traffic via Miami. Geographically speaking, Miami is the best positioned hub to serve South America. AA carriers a good amount of connecting traffic via Miami in addition to it being a massive market to begin with.

New York to Rio is about 4,800 miles. The new planes are 3231s and upgraded 320s. Doubtful plane for a trip of that distance and duration.

Jet Blue has quite a few partner airlines that fly internationally out of Logan, JAL, Lufthansa, Air Lingus, Icelandair, and American among them! Wouldn't take much for Jet Blue to become a feeder airline for international flights, once Terminal C and E are linked behind security, to connect passengers from other parts of the US and the Caribbean to Logan. Hopefully, MassPort will include moving sidewalks in this addition!

Anyone taken the airline that goes to the Azores from Boston? Saw an ad for it on the T and was curious. Is there enough traffic to justify?

Sata. I have never taken it, but I have several Portuguese friends who take the flight 2-3 times a year. The traffic is there. I believe Eastern Mass is home to one of, if not the largest population of Portuguese who are from the Azores.

Heck, Anthony Bourdain went to Fall River to prep for his trip to the Azores for his No Reservations show.

My question is not that Jetblue will work with Delta but that Delta will compete with Jetblue and Jetblue's code share partners (Jblue at terminal C, international codeshare partners at terminal E) in the international market by using Delta terminal A as it was originally planned, with its own international terminal.

Are there more Azoreans in MA than Portuguese or Brazilians? Why is there a direct flight there vs. Lisbon or Sao Paulo?

I doubt there are more people from the Azores than from Brazil. The Azores has a small population, I think less than 300,000. I also believe SATA runs seasonal non-stop flights to Lisbon but am not sure about the schedule.

Brazil lacks a non-stop flight from Boston because it's a lower yielding market. An airline could probably fill a plane 3-4 times a week year round, but it would almost be a waste of an aircraft.

To try to address the original question (the Portuguese/Brazilian "can they support a flight?" question has been done to death), Terminal A was ultimately not built to support the size of aircraft needed for international flights. IIRC, the satellite building can dock a 757, but only by closing an adjacent gate, and anything bigger than that is out.

Even if Delta wanted to dock arriving 757s from Paris or Amsterdam at A, that's not nearly enough traffic to justify the sunk costs of the CBP station. In fact, the customs folks are trying to consolidate processing across the country, not open new facilities for a single airline.

It would be nice if 20 or 30 years down the road Logan moved the international terminal to a more central location (replacing Terminal B), but that's pie-in-the-sky.

I know the Brazilian question has been done to death, but the fact that there's service to the Azores adds a new wrinkle. Surely Azoreans can't be filling planes more than local Brazilians would?

It's my understanding that Terminal E was designed from the ground up to be the only Logan terminal with the facilities to handle any international flights and that MassPort wanted it that way. Since it was rebuilt at a cost of ~400m less than 15 years ago, my bet is no international flights would be allowed to leave or arrive at any other terminal in the forseeable future.

The Azores is much closer... closer than SFO.

In my experience most of the Portuguese immigrants in the Fall River/New Bedford area are from the Azores. I don't think there's a huge population of immigrants or first generation Portuguese from the mainland.

They do international departures from terminals other than E.

E was designed to have a wing off the west end, headed in the direction of the old American Airlines hanger.
