Malden + Melrose Infill and Small Developments

Jesus. Just nuke it.

NOO -- not necessarily

There is new life in old Bunkers

Consider the transformation from the Post Office Bunker [unofficial name] on Smith Street in Waltham on Rt-128 / i-95

Now its the Post -- 400,000 sq ft mostly with one renter [quite recently signed-up]* -- modern lab / tech office complex and it actually looks quite a bit like the renders

The great divide comes down in Malden

Boston Globe said:
For more than four decades, Malden’s cavernous Government Center literally divided the city in half. Now it is being knitted back together again.

The old building, which blocked Pleasant Street and choked off the downtown shopping district, has been demolished. In its place is a mixed-use development that will reopen the thoroughfare and improve access to a nearby MBTA station while adding housing, retail, parking, and a much smaller Malden City Hall.

Development planned for the old hospital gets dropped by MelroseWakefield Healthcare

I think they should just tear it down, build a few public streets, and then auction off individual properties for single/duplex/triple building

Of possible interest, I noticed the other day that the sign had been removed from this building. When I went in to the retail store I asked the guys working there and they just said that they no longer use that building and they thought it was going up for sale.

Interesting location.

Has any lot owner in Melrose cut a deal with the MBTA to stage the construction of the replacement RRBridge for the Haverhill line where it crosses the Lynn Fells Parkway?

Last I heard it was sites like the nearby tennis courts or the town DPW lot.

The Ribbon-cutting that Malden does for every new business opening is great to see on that website!

This is the site that Mystic Brewery was going to take over before they announced they were closing down operations completely this month. (https://patch.com/massachusetts/malden/mystic-brewery-shutting-down)

Comparison: [EDIT: Did they really take influence from that fence?]

Malden update:

Exchange 200
Dellbrook JKS has started construction at Exchange 200, a $100 million redevelopment of a former bank operations center located a stone’s throw from the Malden Center stop on the MBTA's Orange Line. The project will house 300,000 square feet of office, research and development, data center and retail space when it opens next year.

The project has also landed Caffe Nero as its first retail tenant, Exchange 200 developer Berkeley Investments said Monday.

I lived in Malden when the Old Government Center building opened. It was a handsome building for its time. But I never understood why they built it in the middle of one of the most important streets downtown. Pleasant Street from the GC to Malden Square was to be a pedestrian mall, that was in vogue at the time. The mall never happened and Pleasant Street remained a mostly dead zone until recently.
