BOSTON – Over the summer, the MBTA will begin work to replace the South Elm Bridge on the Haverhill Commuter Rail Line.

“Starting July 15th, crews will replace the “nearly 120-year-old bridge with a modern single-span structure.” Located between Bradford and Haverhill stations, this replacement work will extend the life of the bridge an estimated 75 years…..”

I'm currently overseeing the reconstruction of South Elm Street on either side of this bridge (with utility replacements under it as well) as part of a MassWorks grant for the City of Haverhill that was spurred by the new mixed use development being constructed on Railroad Avenue (just to the left in the photo).

The coordination effort between my office, the City of Haverhill, the MBTA, MeVA, and relevant utility companies has been massive. I'm excited to see the bridge project play out, given the technological complexity involved. And when all is said and done, both projects will be a boon to all those who transit this area, whether by train, car, bus, bike or by foot.

Hmmmm. The new temporary exist to the Kendall Northbound (outbound) entrance/exit was cut in this past weekend. I guess the station closure for the end of the month is for demo of the old headhouse???

Snapped some photos on the way home

Temporary Outbound entrance on Main St, in "the Google building"

Rooftop view of the Marriott courtyard. The old exit path is closed off, but no major (new) work there yet

Apparently they are starting to disassemble the current Kendall Northbound headhouse already. Notice today that Kendall will be closed on two weekends instead of one.

According to Nathan Rae, Senior Project Manager for the MBTA, in an update given to the Select Board in Winchester this week, the transit authority now plans to partially reopen the station in late September with a full reopening planned for sometime in December.

That station interior is beautiful. How was it laid out in the heyday of trains? Did it have seating for folks?

Yes it had seats. There's photographs on Google if you search for Union Station Worcester.

It's a shame it's not more actively used... I don't know if there's restaurants in there anymore? It used to have a couple but they struggled from what I recall.

Impressive space and building. It's great Worcester was able to restore it at least.

Luciano’s is still there, I’ve never eaten there but there seem to be quite busy with catering events at Union Station.
Worcester Food Hub is building a kitchen on the other end.

I know why the benches aren’t part of the restoration, but that postcard confirms they did a spectacular job otherwise.

Too bad South Station got the Amshack version of that.

It's been a while since I've been through the station, but I believe that Luciano's still uses the grand hall area as an banquet hall / events space for weddings and the like.

Also, there's apparently a new Lebanese restaurant/ nightclub, 961, with decent looking reviews across the hall now.
