Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

The govt center garage is back on track also will post some renderings later

Your lack of posting GC renderings is litterally killing me. Please post ASAP, and I'll consider it a birthday present. You're so kind!

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

people have been arguing for ages what is considered a skyscraper....just do a google search about it.....there's nothing official. People are constantly arguing it starts at 300 feet or 500 feet.

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

To me (and I'd have to say my view on it is that a skyscraper is whatever you think a skyscraper is, with no official definition), a skyscraper isn't just height. It's also about width. If it's 1000 ft tall and 2000 ft wide, that wouldn't look very skyscraper-like. Now, that's an absurd example, but I'd take the State Street Tower for example. It feels like a skyscraper because it is -- especially by Boston standards -- skinnyish. Now, this would be absolutely dwarfed in NYC. So context (location) is also important.

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

Imo a skyscraper needs to be at least 700'. Anything shorter just doesn't seem that tall.

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

So basically a skyscraper is a completely subjective word that means whatever one wants it to mean.

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

The Sheraton Crossroads in Mahwah always springs to mind with discussions like this. In its context it's arguably a skyscraper, but in a city it would be a highrise at best.

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

I have driven past that all my life and always been perplexed. It looks like something they'd build in North Korea except it's in suburban NY. It's such a joke. And it was supposed to be the center of a larger office park that was never built!

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

This building would be a more interesting casino in Everett than the bronze building currently proposed. The color bronze is too garish for humble Everett and the folded wing shape is a common imitation.

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

I don't understand why this hotel is such a big deal... If it looked like this you all would crying foul too:

The Sheraton Mahwah is quite a beautiful hotel with some significant height. The fact that it was even built is pretty amazing. We can't even build a building that tall in Boston without a shitload of controversy. It's unfortunate the rest of the complex was never built.

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

If it were in the Seaport we'd lament the cladding but applaud the variation in the roofline.

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

Random note. One of my cousins had her wedding at that Sheraton.

I start to get the "tall" feeling at 600'. Something happens in between 500' and 600' that I can't put my finger on. International Place, the Federal Reserve and One Financial create a feeling of awe that the nearby 500 footers just don't. Of course this could be related to their distinct designs and unobstructed placement along the Greenway. One Boston Place and FNBB are also 600' but they are boxy and hidden a bit in the cluster. Context matters a lot when it comes to my definition of a skyscraper. In NYC I don't really get impressed till about 800' (Woolworth or Bloomberg tower).

It will be interesting to see how the Millenium Tower shapes up. It will probably be very visible and unobstructed from both the Common and Memorial Drive. I have high hopes that it will give the skyline a completely new dimension not seen since, well, a long ass time.

I think it relates to the comment earlier regarding the massing. Between 500 and 600 I feel like it begins being much less likely that you can end with something that looks squat unless you have a huge footprint to work within.

Well true but the FNBB is pretty squat at 591'. One Boston Place less so but too much of it's height comes from that little box on top so it really feels like less than 600'. In spite of that I actually like this building, every good skyline needs it's "evil empire" building and this is ours. I hate First National Bank as a building but it adds bulk and density to the skyline so I can accept it's existence, grudgingly.

The "folded wing" as you put it (and usually with the third wing off the back) has been found to be the best layout for maximizing rooms while limiting core space for elevators etc. You see it so much in Vegas because it's the best bang for the buck layout.

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's

^ That explains a lot, thanks.
