Suffolk dude, this whole place is crazy! Seriously, my office is well up in the building on the corner of Summer and Hawley. I've got a great view of Filenes (and the Province St. crane). If I wasn't such a loser when it came to posting photos, I'd have lots of nice ones for the board!

Re: Filene's

Hey Tobyjug, send me your photos. I would be glad to host them for you.

Re: Filene's

Hmmmm....I wonder if I ride the elevator with Tobyjug regularly? I'm another 101 Archer, but I have to walk around the corner to see the progress....I'll have a great view of 120 Kingston though (if it happens)

yeah I am too far away : (

I am down on 185 Franklin near PO Square.
Takes me like 5/6 minutes to walk up town. . .

Re: Filene's

Spent a few minutes at the lunch wagon talking to the demo guys. They told me that by the second or third week of February they will be up on Filenes' roof taking the place down. I asked their opinion as to whether they felt cramped, given the confines of Downtown Crossing. "Not at all" one worker answered. "We took down the Province Street Garage, and we were one foot from the Parker House!"

Re: Filene's

And here are Tobyjug's photo updates. The 4th image is in the interior work. Such a creepy shot!

Re: Filene's

The last shot reminds me of the scene in I am Legend where Will Smith chases his dog into the warehouse in New York where the "dark chasers" live. I know i've used that movie in two posts today, but i just saw it last night and i enjoyed it a bunch (they rushed the ending though).

Great photos. thanks.

Re: Filene's

The first and second photos look like they are destroying part of the first floor fa?ade, which I thought was supposed to be protected. I hope I'm wrong.

Maybe they're finally getting rid of that decorative facade and throwing on a ton of precast!

They were allowed to do this in the Boston Landmark Commission Report*

1. The Commission acknowledges that no intact original or later contributing
storefronts appear to survive on the 1912 purpose-built Filene?s store or
the 1905 Jones, McDuffee, and Stratton building except for the mezzanine
windows on the 1905 Jones, McDuffee, and Stratton building, and that
new storefronts may be proposed to accommodate new retail or other
tenants. Such proposed new storefronts should be confined to the area
below the top of the original canopy on the 1912 purpose-built Filene?s
store and below the stone lintel atop the two-story columns on the 1905
Jones, McDuffee, and Stratton building.
The original canopies for the purpose built
Filene?s store may be reconstructed from physical or documentary
evidence. Removal of the existing canopy on the 1912 purpose-built
Filene?s store is encouraged.

*Sorry no link available. I had it saved on my harddrive.

Re: Filene's

I think (or at least hope) they are required to preserve some elements of the fa?ade that actually say "Filene's" on them, such as the clocks.

Good News:
2. The Filene?s clocks and the bells shall be maintained in working order.

Bad News:
7.The Filene?s Logo on the clocks may be removed and replaced with
review and approval by the commission of the replacement element.

More Bad News:
Original or later contributing signs, marquees and awnings integral to the building ornamentation or architectural detailing shall be retained and
repaired where necessary, except that any signs etched in the stone lintel
of the 1905 Jones, McDuffee, and Stratton Company building identifying
Filene?s may be replaced by a ?knock-out? panel and used to identify
current tenants, and other signs identifying Filene?s or any other building
occupant may be removed.

Re: Filene's

^haha ya Lrfox i agree too! that is what i was thinking when i first saw that picture. And ya I am Legend was a great movie, and i see what you mean with the rushed ending....Vermont? COME ON! lol

Re: Filene's

The 1905 building wasn't built for Filene's, so it doesn't bother me to have Filene's name removed from its fa?ade. But I'd sure like to see it remain somewhere on the original Filene's building.

Re: Filene's

Today workers began removing portions of the upper facade of Filene's mall style addition on the corner of Washington and Franklin Streets. Simultaneously, jackhammers are chipping away at the large concrete "tree pots" in the adjoining Franklin St. pocket park/urinal/pigeon wildlife preserve.

Re: Filene's

I don't think so. There is a chain link fence around the whole area.
