New Red and Orange Line Cars

So I take it that the new trains on both the Red & Orange lines will be washed periodically so that they're not so dirty looking. Good!! Any chance that the Green & Blue Line will get a car wash?

All lines have built in train-car washes at the carhouses, and should be cleaned periodically. If space gets crammed, I think the wash bays are just used as additional maintenance or inspection bays. Also, if the wash systems themselves run into an error/have issues, they're rather niche pieces of equipment, and can take a while to repair. But yes, theoretically, every line should have clean cars, especially after the carhouse upgrades coming online in the coming years.

Some of the buses could stand some cleaning also. Especially during the winter months from dirty street snow & ice. You can hardly see out the windows!!

Same thing stands for busses, as most garages have specialized drive-thru bus wash equipment. Similar to the train washes, if anything needs replacing or repair, it's likely going to take a while for parts or expertise.

Is that why so many bus haven't seen soap & water in the winter? Honestly, they could stand some.

You do understand how quickly a vehicle gets dirty on a wet winter day right? After an hour of driving my car looks like it hasn't been washed in a decade.

The video is unrelated but MBTA Twitter reports 1412 and 1413 have been delivered, which would vaguely follow the timelines given at the FMCB meetings recently. However that is still only 2/6 cars needed for the next trainset so I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see that until December at this rate. And now the factory is supposed to be sending RL and OL simultaneously but they don't even seem to have the OL production down yet.

Caught a new train today- Love it, but the beeping doors will slowly drive me mad.

Theoretically, could the new cars be delivered from SPG over the B&A?

Sure, but they couldn't be riding on their own wheels; they'd have to be put on flatbeds, just like when they're trucked in.

I'm guessing that would require running a train specifically for that purpose which doesn't seem particularly efficient.

It could be efficient; you could ship more cars at once (so fewer trips), and presumably you'd save a bunch on police escort overtime. The T would probably want to hire an Amtrak engineer who's familiar with the territory all the way from SPG to BOS though, and this move is only happening in the dead of night, so that could get expensive.

On the bright side: Looks like the rails run right by the CRRC factory in Springfield; not positive on the clearances but I think you could ship the cars all the way from the factory, into the South Station yard, then shunt them pretty much right onto the track 61 test track.

I don't think shipping lots at once is in their best interest though, a slow staggered delivery into Boston is best so each car can be tested individually, and a train carrying one or two married pairs clearly won't be economically feasible.

I haven't even SEEN any of the new trains, much less ride in one! And that is what I'm waiting for. For more new trains to be put in service before I try to get on one, & for some of those old rust buckets to start disappearing first.

Why aren't they testing some of the trains out in Springfield also, so that when they get here, they'll be ready for revenue service? Don't you think that would speed up testing a little & get the trains into revenue operations sooner? :)

I saw them at Wellington this morning in the delivery area with the "Oversize Load" trucks still parked next to them, so I think they actually arrived this morning (they might have been "delivered" but left in Springfield for a couple of days).

Jahvon -- I'm sure they test them to the extent that they can before shipment -- BUT the trains are part of a system which includes the tracks [even the test tracks] and the operators

Even if you tested them extensively in Springfileld and then shipped them ["ready for use"] the T would be remiss if they didn't subject them to local testing on the respective test tracks -- indeed I would expect that even after they were tested on the Test Tracks -- that the T will run them on the real tracks for some time [off hours] before they are turned over for revenue service

My toddler recognizes the new cars and FREAKS every time we get one. "NEW TRAIN! NEW TRAIN!". Always gets a chuckle from the rest of the people on the platform.

They're very nice. I especially like the wider doors. You still have a stubborn idiot on both sides that refuses to move to let people on/off, but the idiots now only block half the door and there is room between them to move the stroller easily.

Am I crazy or does it look like in this video of a new red train you can pass between cars Here?
