Good god, that's one of the few modernist towers that deserves protection. Admittedly it's a sharp falloff in quality from the Seagram and Lever House to this, but I'd call it the most solidly straightforward tower of the pinstripe suit era, and it sure beats the inferior examples across the street and almost everything on Lexington or 3rd Ave. Siiiggghhhhh

And historic preservation concerns aside, this is a huge freaking tower to be coming down.
 
They're willfully demolishing a building over 700' tall? That's crazy! It really shows how the "Manhattanization" of Boston will never happen. This is taller than the Winthrop Square proposal!
 
This is completely insane. It's like a cry for help. We have too much money and can't control ourselves!

Yup... too much money, too little regard for good city building (GLASS BOXES). Yet being a complainy-pants is almost even more frustrating because it's so completely pointless against these forces. Landmarks is out to lunch and De Blasio likes to pretend he's a progressive but has made his bed with REBNY just the same.

To quote Gordon Gekko: "It's all about bucks, kid. The rest is conversation."
 
Wow, this building is 700 ft tall, the new one is supposed to be 500 ft taller, so 1,200 ft. Not messing about.

This is the JP Morgan Chase building. The more tony, exclusive JP Morgan building is tucked away behind this one at 755 feet.
 
I wonder how much demolishing a 700'+ footer, whilst paying to relocate 6,000 employees, then constructing a new 1,200' footer in the middle of Manhattan costs in aggregate?

Was out working in the crazy storm yesterday, and right around 8pm the clouds started clearing and we got one of those crazy fire skies. It was surreal to go from sunny, to apocalyptic clouds and seeming-tornado winds, to heavy rain for several hours, to this explosion of orange.

Unfortunately didn't have the good camera with me... just some iPhone SE shots. But daaaayum mothah naychahh!

It was similarly really quite surreal here in Boston as well. 7PM as the storm moved out we were left with a greenish hazy glow - the world looked like a Monet painting - and then the green hazy glow broke into a neon sunset.

Thanks for the pics. I also noticed the strange orange sky in the Boston suburbs, around 7:30-8:00 range. The scene felt a bit otherworldly.
