They'll be replacing those stairs and railings with a continuation of the granite wall next month.
 
Will they be adding "Please do not walk on the grass" signs too? :)
 
needs some landscaping... but definitely an improvement. i still think the main building needs a super modern glass addition.
 
Looks like someone wasn't using the latest Construction Docs/missed a revision cloud!
 
The stairs were there to "welcome" people to hang out on the front lawn like a park. The problem was that it just became a short cut for people to cut through the lawn to the building. That would eventually lead to maintenance issues. The lawn is still very accessible, just not as convenient for people to cut across.

Ah, that makes for an interesting case study.

I think the lawn will ultimately still attract people to rest on it even with the granite wall at the street. People in Boston love to chill on grass in the nice weather. The key to welcome people to stay in the grassy area should be a welcoming gesture along the paths to the building rather than at the high traffic primary access point.
