Art deco kicks ass.

Dr. Who visiting town?

Hey, PH, with those nice Lower Mills shots I can still smell the Bakers chocolate. It used to hang thick in the air. Not even Hershey, PA has anything on the way it was. A few years after the factory closed, you could catch a whiff on a real hot day. Kind of like my Grandfather used to say about the molasses in the North End for a few years after the syrupy tsunami.

Melville Park - Dorchester Estates (near Field's Corner)

Damn, I've never been here. Dorchester certainly is a quirky patchwork.

The street is called Wellesley Park and is well worth visiting. This section of Dorchester feels like Newton. It is a short walk from Shawmut station on the Red Line.

As someone who live's in this nieghborhood watch your ass when visiting!

I was very, very hesitant to move to Dorchester. I grew up in Weston, then moved to Brookline with a stop in Arlington in between. Then I ended up on the edge of the Back Bay/South End... so Dorchester... well, that was a whole other world. Or so I thought - it's actually been great in the two years I've been here. And really safe (at least in the expensive Savin Hill area).

The reality is that Dorchester is humongous and is really just a collection of about 12 major communities. Each one is totally different. Some are like Newton, some are like East Cambridge, some are like Brighton, some are like Southie, some are (for lack of a better word) "ghetto"... it's a wide, varied mix, and it's just an enormous piece of land that really fails its residents by going by only one name.

On an architectural front - everyone should make a trip to see the Victorians in Melville Park/Wellesley Ave in Dorchester once. The awnings alone are just so beautiful. With energy-efficient design becoming more important, might we see more natural cooling awnings on future buildings? That would be cool!

I have no idea what that means.
It means be careful of your surroundings when visiting,I live in a beautiful old 1831 historic home on a nice st but crime is very rampant here! I know, I,ve been a victim of crime 16 times in 20 years(shot at,robbed ect, ect, ect,I've had 8 shootings right outside of my front gate(yes some shot to death!) can,t even keep track of how many shootigs in the surrounding nieghborhood,so please visit(we used to have house tours) but be careful! I've posted this pix before,my nieghborhood!

A good rule of thumb on safety is that the eastern side of Dorchester - the part that follows the coast and runs along the red line is good, safe and working class.

The "west dorchester" is the part that you hear about on the news every night with shootings, etc.

As beautiful as this Melville Park area is, it is in the middle of Dorchester - too close for comfort to the western bad parts and just to the edge of the eastern "safer" parts.

Boston 02124 - you have a beautiful house!

Thanks Pelhamhal! I don,t mean to bash Dorchester! If it was all that bad I've would have moved, there are many good things about living here, cheap(where else could I live like a king in a house like this in Boston?)close to the T,highway, downtown, beach ect! But it is inner city living and yes my nieghborhood is always in the news, but they're are a lot of good people here striveing to make it work,me included! my home of 17 years

Boston02124, My father is interested in investing in some real estate in the city due to the market at the moment, but wasn't all that familiar with any area outside of downtown. When I showed him the pictures of your house, he felt inspired to go for a drive through the city, especially different areas in DOT and look for his dream property. You've done a nice job with a beautiful home, and I thought you'd like to know that a few simple photos have inspired someone else to try to do the same. Thanks for sharing.

That house is 5000+ SF with ornate, grand ballrooms. It is stunningly beautiful on the inside and outside and it's on the market for just $895,000

Welcome to Dorchester!

A little bit blurry but I love the sun rays on the background next to the skyline.
