So I re-visited a perch in Mission Hill the other day...was hoping for some wide open shots but they've put a fence up and I was shooting through bare branches the whole time. Oh well, it's still a cool spot to view the city from.

Last time I was here was over 8 years ago (...8 years already??) and I was a fresh face to Boston as well as the whole digital camera thing. Here's what I got on March 7th, 2005:

And September 5th, 2005:

FYI that's the Archstone Boston Common under construction downtown....

From the beginning of the month (the day of the Rolling Rally). Finally have a chance to go through my pictures with Thanksgiving.

^ Great reflections and colors, man.

And to everyone here, happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for making this place so great.

Couldn't decide which I like better so you get both.

Ohhhhhh, yes. There used to be more; it appears some of them have been removed.

I don't understand why, out of all the bridges in the city, this one became the locus point for all of the locks. I guess an open highway is just as romantic as the Seine in the minds of lovestruck couples.

Just catching up on this thread. This is a great picture. I think with NorthPoint, the GLX, Eastward growth of Kendall, and future removal of McGrath that this stretch is in line for a Fenway Boylston St. style makeover in the coming decade plus. It's got good bones and some coming infrastructure improvements that will further this whole stretch in East Cambridge up to Somerville.

Mass Ave over the Pike looking at the old Tower Records/Best Buy?

Correct. It may just be the local college kids getting rid of their unused locks once they transfer/leave/graduate. With enough locks, they begin attracting other people to put their locks there.

God I hope that part of Somerville/Cambridge doesn't become another Fenway. I know it's probably blasphemy to people on this site but I'll be sad if the McGrath comes down and the GLX goes through to Union Square. Yes the area is a disaster for pedestrians and street life but it retains a rawness (and relative cheapness) that keeps it vibrant. Artists with limited day jobs still live there, as do immigrants speaking Portuguese. A nice tree lined boulevard in place of the overpass and rapid transit will raise rent considerably and put a swift end to that. I lived on Prospect Hill a couple years ago and loved the atmosphere. Now when I go back I still think it's great but can sense the sterility creeping in - preparation for the Green Line. I can't shake the feeling that something unrecoverable is going to be lost...

At least the urban development nerd in me can enjoy the transitional process. From a "dance party" beneath the McGrath many months ago;
