Porter Square Infill and Small Developments

What are "extended stays"?

Weeks to months. Usually features a kitchen. Ideal for bringing in someone to HQ for an extended training (2-3 weeks), or a PhD in from abroad for a semester.

Do you know if the "Hotel Cambridge" is going to have ground floor retail?

^^Already in the very early planning stages; is to eventually deck as much railway row as possible, and build dense housing, and possibly eventually add mini stations for DMU's to fill some of the gaps between the commuter stations.

i wish i could travel 50, 75, 105 years into the future for a glimpse at what lies ahead.

This is definitely the ideal solution. Now if only we could get electrification throughout the system (or on major lines at least) to make it possible for our commuter trains to use more tunnels.

Lesley was the high bidder when the T put out an RFP a few years ago. They wanted to deck and build a dorm. The neighborhood freaked out, and it is on hold.

This was 12 years ago, and the recession did more to stop those plans than the neighborhood.

Utile and the T took another swing at it in 2011, but that edition featured some very questionable design choices (e.g., a ground floor parking garage built directly above a heavy rail T station) and nothing ever actually went to bid.

A lot has changed since 2011, and even more has changed since 2005. I'd love to see this all brought up again. However, the potential for air rights development here to screw up a future Green Line-to-Porter-and-beyond extension might be the limiting factor.

Great news, Target will be a welcome addition to the Porter Square area. The space isn't that big I wonder how the selection will be.

Article says 8,000 sf larger than the Central Square one, so a little more breathing room. They should just take over most of the Galleria and build a large full-concept store.

They should just buy it and renovate it into what they need, but I'm not sure there's enough parking there for full-concept.

The article details the non-compete the Galleria signed with Target, btw. No Amazon lockers allowed in the building :).

Competition is healthy.

There's another supermarket within 1/2 mile down Beacon Street, and another that's likely less than 1 mile down Somerville Ave towards Union. Target might decide that a food marketplace competing with 3 local supermarkets is not cost effective in their limited space.

The Central Square location sells food. This one likely will as well.

That's right, and central has 4 grocery stores.

Nothing wrong with Target taking a little pressure off of the absolutely mobbed Star Market.
