Portland International Jetport | PWM

Another photo from last week.

Oh wow!! They could do so much with this area. I didn’t realize that was the current state of that part of the terminal. They have a pretty good sign there atleast letting passengers know there is construction going on

I agree but the seating has been moved so much during the past few months and hopefully everything will be visually aesthetic with new carpeting along with the opening of the expanded gate area complete with restrooms and a SARA for the critters. Am looking forward to late May and I'll try and get a sneak preview prior to the construction dividing wall coming down and will post some photos.

Also, Portlander, what about some dynamic wraps for compelling images on the walls? It's largely plain looking. I have a mural artist friend who does great work and just bought a massive new printer for it. The materials used today are fantastic and can even be put over brick! It kind of molds into it. I can think of some great imagery, especially that one featuring the downtown skyline with the White Mountains in the background and the Portland Headlight in the foreground. I'll get you 40% off too, maybe 50%. Not expensive to do, at all, really. And so that first impression walking out of the jetway into the terminal will become truly epic.

I like your idea TC and we should connect your artist friend with the airport director when the baggage claim renovations get closer to fruition. What I can tell you is that PWM has a contract with the Clear Channel marketing firm like many other airports around the country and getting anything done without their involvement is difficult when I mentioned ideas to Paul in the past. The current project that is underway is already locked down financially and any deviation would be an exercise in futility at this point.

Got it. I'll circle back in May. Clear Channel would have nothing to do with this as what he does is primarily considered art, though he did brilliantly air-brush 35 foot-high Champagne bottles on the East 34th Street Heliport tarmac in Manhattan (use Google Earth to see). If he buys the image and does some Photoshop on it, it then becomes art, not advertising. There would be no text or words on it. Otherwise, you would have to take down that framed art project in the hallway. And if people can't figure out it's Portland from a lack of text or words, they should immediately get back on a plane and leave, never to return. No dummies allowed.

I'm normally elated when a new airline commences service from Portland but this is still a head scratcher for me. Maybe they'll fly from PWM to FLL or PBI in the future. (y)

Is the idea to take this flight to New Haven, to then take an Uber/Lyft to the Amtrak station for the two-hour commuter train ride into Manhattan? I don't know about that. I'd rather do the Concord Coach bus that drops off near the U.N. building. True, 5.5 to 6.5 hours travel time, but you can literally recline back and sleep the entire way in their roomy passenger space. In theory, flying will save you an hour if everything goes perfectly right. But I'd rather just sleep through that last hour to be safe. A 3-leg trip versus a single one can result in exponentially created travel hell. And I think we can assume it's a non-stop, thank you.

First, I apologize for that graphic being so large! I did it on my phone (obviously) and I didn't realize how it would look on desktop.

As for "why New Haven," let's see... there's the pizza, Yale, the Knights of Columbus Supreme HQ (and I'm a Past Grand Knight and I never had cause to visit Supreme for anything).... that should add up to at least a couple of dozen pax per year! Throw in the Long Island Sound beaches in case driving to OOB or Wells is just too far to manage....

Here's a more interesting thought question. Imagine that some airline (let's call it Cranberry Isles Air) wanted to create a hub in Portland. Where at the Jetport could we / would we put a Terminal B? Imagine it's a similar size to the existing terminal (14 gates).

Most airlines (especially low cost airlines) want to maximize the amount of time their planes are in the air (that's when they're making money). So PWM-HVN might just be about squeezing some extra revenue out of an aircraft that would otherwise just be sitting on the tarmac (or even occupying a gate) between scheduled flights. Looking at the schedule, the flight departs HVN at 1:50pm, turns around in Portland and is back at their HVN hub by 3:40pm. That's a full round trip in under 3 hours. The plane presumably has a full slate of flights to other places before/after the Portland trip, and there aren't too many options to fill a small gap in the schedule. So a sub-3hr round trip to Portland is at least worth a shot.

New Haven's actually a pretty cool city on its own in addition to being a decent enough gateway to NYC, but I would imagine the bigger hope for Avelo is Portland's appeal as a leisure destination for people in SW CT.

Nice to see you back on the Portland forums Lrfox, how are things in New Bedford?

That's a good point. (As an aside, without getting into too much detail from my snooping, that rooftop condo at Hobson's Landing with the elevated platform we've all made fun of? The owner does, in fact, live in Connecticut.)

Thanks! I actually am not in New Bedford much apart from the occasional visit to see family/friends. I was in Boston for almost 10 years before buying a place in Providence in late 2023. So that's where I am now. We have little place outside of Bethel, so we're in Maine quite a bit and I occasionally read through the Portland forum here.

I don't see New Haven as a destination other than for Yale. It has a lot of what I call, "HOP" activity on the streets downtown. "Hang Out People", and so you don't quite know what they are doing there, just standing, hanging out, with apparently no real purpose. I wouldn't say necessarily miscreants, but potentials perhaps. Sorry, but I'm just not seeing it for New Haven. When I used to arrive at the Amtrak station from Manhattan, I would walk a few blocks to Hertz or the 6-7 blocks to Enterprise for a rental up to Maine. It was a brisk walk, I'd say. But not too bad. There are some cute restaurants (especially Claire's vegetarian, with amazing confections--especially the cakes).
