Quincy Center Redevelopment

It all looks very nice. I’m sure a few stories will get chopped off all of it, but great to see this level of development. I’ve been saying for years that the contrast between one side of Hancock and the other is just begging for redevelopment.

Kinda sad to be moving out soon.

“The Grossman Companies is planning the redevelopment of the shopping plaza located at 56, 74, 126 Granite Street in Quincy Center. Plans call for a 7-story development to include 8,300 square feet of office space, over 50,000 square feet of restaurant/retail space, and 256 residential units….”

This is beautiful and maybe deserves its own thread! We need to keep building higher and keeping retail on the first floor on these 1 floor retail plazas! Now, if the red line could be faster and the Old Colony Lines with double-tracking and electrification (more on that in the appropriate threads 😀)

For an area with a robust downtown core though, I'm mildly frustrated with 7 story maxes dictated by 5 over 2s. This was addressed in the thread on why there's so many of those, but what I'm saying is this location is prime for spending more than the 5 over 2 constraints (look at One Chestnut).

Very interested to see how this interacts (if at all) with Generals Bridge to better stich across Burgin Parkway.

The 126 Granite street project will definitely be a truly nice upgrade to Quincy Center. (y)

Acapulcos Closing for World's Dumbest Park

Ok I may be editorializing the title a little.

Acapulcos Mexican Family Restaurant & Cantina has announced its imminent closure on Facebook

[...]

This fall, the city announced plans to take the property by eminent domain, demolish the building and create a very small park, which it calls a "pocket park," in honor of President John Quincy Adams.

Acapulcos expressed interest in reopening elsewhere in the city.

[...]

City officials estimate a cost of $761,000 for the remediation and demolition of Acapulcos and another $2.6 million for construction of the new park, according to planning documents.

It is unclear how much the city will compensate Acapulcos for the taking and potential relocation costs. The mayor's chief of staff said there are no details on the financial arrangement yet. Parties are "working toward a mutual agreement," Chris Walker said.

A statue of John Quincy Adams will stand in the new park once completed.

This is terrible urban planning. It's one of the most prime parcels in the city, and instead of putting 10 floors of residential on top of Acapulcos (or whatever other commercial use) we're putting grass and a statue. Across the street from a rare example of good privately owned public space in the Stop and Shop HQ plaza, the cemetary where JQA is interred, and the Quincy Square park.

There is less than no need for this. It's actively degrading Quincy Center.

Such abuses of eminent domain use. That's a fine block and he's going to chop it up for a tax dollar bonfire. I think his last grab was the block further south on Hancock that will one day serve as the entrance plaza to his buddy Hale's condo high-rise.
