Boston seeks bidders for $37M renovation of public library at Copley Square

Boston is seeking bids for a $36.9 million renovation of the Boston Public Library’s Johnson building, the system's main branch overlooking Copley Square.

The project at 700 Boylston St. seeks to renovate 130,000 square feet of public space within the 425,690-square-foot, seven-story facility. The plan calls for upgrades to building systems as well as the property's entrance and lobby. Other sections of the library slated for renovations include the children’s library; young adult’s library; Rabb Auditorium; meeting and assembly space; and training and education spaces. The project also will include the addition of 4,500 square feet of street-level retail space.

Built in 1972, the Johnson building is located adjacent to the historic 1895 McKim central library building.

Selection of contractors will be based on a scoring system that gives points for management experience, capacity to complete the project, and references. Construction is expected to commence in December and be completed by February 2016.

The project will include removal of three dozen granite slabs that stand at either side of the main entrance to the library.

Bids are due by Thursday, June 19. Project information packets are available at the city’s bid counter at 26 Court St.

GOOD F'ING RIDDANCE.

Re: Menino plans renovations to BPL's Johnson Wing

^ I'm grateful...though let's not forget the slabs were considered necessary at the time...this section of Boylston wasn't what it is now with a lot more dicey blocks, a lack of foot traffic, a wind-swept Pru arcade, and not so much high end retail.

This project can't come fast enough. When is it scheduled to be completed?

Re: Menino plans renovations to BPL's Johnson Wing

From the BPL website:

Phase 1 of the renovation — taking place right now on the second floor of the Johnson building — is scheduled to be complete in March 2015 and phase 2 is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2016. Ongoing updates on project progress are available this this blog.

Here is a view of the second floor of the Johnson building where nonfiction collections, reference services, and a community reading area will be located as well as a new children’s library and teen space. What’s shown is stacks and stacks of stacks that are in the process of being assembled and installed around the second floor to hold the nonfiction collection. Newly-constructed restrooms are in the background and the entrance to Teen Central is off to the right. Teen Central will house its own collections as well as a digital lab, lounge for gaming and films, and a quiet study area.

Finally! A modern library for Boston.

Re: Menino plans renovations to BPL's Johnson Wing

The Boylston entrance is now closed until Summer 2016 and all public access to the BPL is now through McKim Building's Dartmouth St/Copley Square entrance. A ramp has been added to this entrance to make it ADA accessible.

Re: Menino plans renovations to BPL's Johnson Wing

I wish that this had some additional floors added to the top of it with a cultural/interactive area (more than the maps room).

Re: Menino plans renovations to BPL's Johnson Wing

Nitpick, but could this be renamed "Boston Public Library renovations" or something? Menino has passed, and this project is ongoing...

Do yourself a favor and visit the Copley Library TODAY. Go at night if you want the special treat of seeing the atrium of the Johnson Building the way it was meant to be seen. Unlit. The central volume is stunning without lighting. You're in for a treat

I do admit to enjoying the Johnson Wing, especially the atrium, but this perplexes me:

"the way it was meant to be seen"

Unsure what you mean by this. He intended it to be dark?

Well... he intended for you to discover it with an Indiana Jones hand torch. The complete absence of lighting fixtures in the atrium isn't a mistake.

The Johnson Wing is based on the architecture of the Ancient Near East. Qumram Caves / Temple of Dendur.

Joe -- that's because Johnson scavenged all of the lights McKim designed for the BPL for use in 500 Boylston and International Place
