Rose Kennedy Greenway

I believe that commitments made and permits awarded before construction of the Big Dig even began, established, in perpetuity, that most of the Greenway parcels would be open space, or used for public purposes (which would allow a non-profit). There was/is a reason why the Commonwealth can't sell or lease most of the Greenway parcels to private parties, and generate some revenue / cost offsets.

then the winter times will always look desolate on the Greenway. Talk about poor planning

This was in the Globe today.

Not sure how this guy will end up doing.
But the Greenway needs a couple of things.
**Ice Skating Rink
**New Aquarium
**Winter Greenhouse
Greenway should take different shapes every season.

Riff: have you been to the Greenway area recently:
Ice Skating at Boston Harbor Hotel -- just off Greenway
Newly redone Aquarium at Aquarium -- just off Greenway
There was a plan for a winter garden -- didn't quite happen

What the Greenway needs is a fine cleverly designed Sun Dial -- something that will look differently everyday

Ice Skating at Boston Harbor Hotel -- This is very cute
But the Greenway needs an entire Parcel focused on a winter theme which would include Ice Skating

Newly redone Aquarium at Aquarium -- (I'm talking about a first rate 100Million dollar upgrade to the Aquarium) Not a new tank

There was a plan for a winter garden -- Too bad

I walked around the Greenway last week. It has no LIFE or any-type of character. That is why the private Landlord's like Boston harbor Hotel have to be creative.

couldn't find a parcel 12 thread. If this happens then the other parcels should follow

State Representative Aaron Michlewitz of the North End has introduced legislation to cap the I-93 highway ramp on Parcel 12 of the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway by November 1, 2017.

The State owns the land through its transportation department, MassDot, and has always been legally obligated to cover the Greenway ramps according to the initial terms of the Big Dig. The new legislation puts a date on that requirement,

Good!

That accompanying image of the North End is incredible! There should be more instances of images like that that depict Boston on a national level.

That's from the Custom House observation deck. If you've never made it up there before, I cannot recommend it enough.

Cool, thanks! Given that's it's my favorite building, I'm not sure why I've never been up there before

^ Makes a big emphatic point that the pergola in the North End parks is NOT intended for vine growth and never was. It was always purely sculptural. I guess they get asked this a lot!

I'd have to go over and double check, but I think they're incorrect. I know the vine support wire definitely goes up the vertical structure. I'm not sure though if it goes over the top too. I think it does. In any case, the pergola provides next to no shade, so vines or not, it's a failure in that respect. Its nice as a sculptural element though.

Absolutely all the ramps should be covered. And developed. By real developers who can get the job done as opposed to ineffectual non-profits who couldn't get a dog house built. And actual buildings should be built. An already too big park doesn't need even more park land.

+1.........For the potential the Greenway should have it's just not living up to a lively park. Just a nice place to take a stroll in the summer, The rest of the year its just a place to walk through to get to your location. A large path of open space between buildings with nothing going on.

At least build the Fucking Greenhouse on one of the parcels.

Which is infinitely dumb. It doesn't provide shade, it doesn't protect from elements, it's a useless "thing" in the middle of the Greenway.

One of these things is not like the other... One of these things just doesn't belong. It's WAY out of scale and the material is different, which is the reason for all of the problems (steel gets hot).

This is the main problem - when a space exceeds two times the height of a person, it becomes awkward and uninviting (unless it's an atrium, but even those need precise proportional design):

I think that the PNF might be saying that, even though the structure was intended to support vine growth, the finished product was clearly not designed properly for that use, so now there's no use in continuing to plant more vines.

What is the point of the Pergola if not to provide shade? Why not string it with cloth or nylon straps or wooden slats.

If it is both non-functional and unattractive, then just take it down. Its not like it is making any kind of artistic statement. No use trying to put lipstick on a pig.

Yeah, i like the idea of maybe some canvas or something hanging between the slats. Could look very nice with either plain canvas or some cool multi-colored/sail-esque kinda design.

I'd be happy with just slats in metal so that there's not complaint about maintenance. The area could provide a much cooler respite in the summer and make sense of the benches facing the sun.
