Rose Kennedy Greenway

They had half of the "Lightblades" going tonight. I assume they were being tested?

Crappy video of the lightblades in action:

Tacky. Not even worth it at night.

Tacky indeed.

The worst elements of two cities: Brasilia and Vegas.

I think they look nice, but the color changing is way too fast

I was going to say: "if Vegas were in South Florida..."

At least now we know where a casino can go...

Anything lit up can be compared to Vegas; any steel structure can be Brazilia. The weakness in those places is that the weakness is the only attraction. Here, they're meant to compliment and interest, not to draw.

I doubt anyone will travel to Boston to see these things, so the fact that as destinations they are "worthless" doesn't really play. They look nice, they provide some color and interest to the waterfront. You're asking too much of pieces of metal.

You're asking too much of pieces of metal.

I'm asking they be torn down and reconceived. I think falling over they can do.

^ I understand you want them gone, but is it because you just hate looking at them, or because you somehow expected them to be more than just lit up metal bars?

I'd love to hear what the designer had in mind. Do the colors mean something, a la the Hancock building? Underwhelming.

Briv, thanks for posting and for including the video! I'm sure the colors can be synchronized to some sort of soft background music or for small, outdoor performances of some kind. I'm not thrilled with the design of these light panels, would have preferred something similar to the light poles they have at LAX which look very cool in both daylight and nighttime, but having said that, I'm surprised and glad to see this sort of thing. Boston could use more color at night. I remember people complaining about the Zakim being lite up...and now, we couldn't imagine the Zakim without it's lighting. I wish it were brighter actually! And I hope the other light poles (the thin white ones in the same area) utilize color as well.

is it because you just hate looking at them, or because you somehow expected them to be more than just lit up metal bars?

It's because the mediocre and disappointing way they turned out at night doesn't justify their positively blighting the landscape with looming grey panel towers all day.

I like color. I like lights. But just as I don't think the need to bury the artery justifies the way the Greenway has turned out as a whole, just as I don't think "better than a parking lot" justifies half the shitty architecture that gets put up here, I don't think these clunky "blades" were the best way to light up the corridor.

I agree with Atlantaden about the lack of lighting in Boston.

I think the Zakim needs to be a bit brighter (it was at first, was it not?) and i think these are nice at night. It's not neon like you see Vegas, but more like the post you see at the LAX entrance. Unfortunately, these are pointless during the day. There is no artistic or visual value to these without being lit-up.

This will be great at night though if they do plan on having music or events here. If only we could have some nicely lit crowns and buildings now (off topic- 1 Lincoln has the best night lighting in the city IMHO).

I also am curious as to how long this will last. the Zakim lights appear to have dimmed a lot, and it makes me wonder how long it will take to replace bad bulbs and problems with this project.

(Yikes, I'm off topic...) :?
The other night, driving over the Zakim, I noticed nearly all of the blue "jellies" have been removed from the lighting and many of the lights simply were not working anymore. :( Poor maintenance of existing structures/real estate in Boston has always been a pet peeve of mine.

i was searching the list of best/worst parks that someone posted at the top of page 56 and thought of how nice it would be if the greenway had a section similar to pioneer courthouse square in portland, or. the greenway really needs a place that just screams for people to hangout and be entertained. the empty lawns and paths to nowhere just aren't cutting it.

Yeah, the Zakim has a bunch of broken lights. It sucks.

Dude, chill. Either blades of steel that get lit up at night, or shrubbery.

The NIMBY of Ni, perhaps?

The wharf park benches are metal but look like cheap plastic patio furniture. And I can't figure this out. Why put benches here? So people can sit and watch traffic come straight at them? Give them a good position to hear the roar and smell the exhaust? Is this park being designed by complete idiots? Or are the clients the idiots? Hopefully it'll be such a disaster it'll be redone in a year or two.

So far, i like the light blades. I think it is far to early to judge them based off a couple of pictures of them being tested though.
