SBWTC /South Boston Waterfront Transportation Center | Seaport

Please tell me they'll cover this pig with some colorful lipstick screening whether's it's blocked or not. I hate that damn garage at the SE Expressway/Mass Ave interchange, such an awful sight as you enter/exit the city. The city should make it mandatory that new parking garages be somewhat presentable.

Because this is a MassPort project, the city has literally nothing to do with it. MassPort can build what they want where they want (ETA: on their property). For all that we like to grouse about the city, I can't imagine anyone there approving this as it is designed.

As I understand, MassPort does voluntarily let developer project on their property go through city processes, but everyone understands it's voluntary.

That gap in the facade on the right side annoys the hell out of me.

It's like they need to remind you it's a shitty parking garage after going through all that trouble to hide the fact it's a shitty parking garage.

OK, but the right side of that image is going to be mostly hidden by the new Omni Hotel, right?

I love how people complain about Seaport traffic. I have a good solution, lets build a huge garage.

First of all, allow me to preface that I am an outspoken proponent for progressive transportation solutions in our cities (especially fixed rail transit and bicycle infrastructure). That said (and sarcasm aside), I wonder if the new garage may put a dent in Seaport traffic.

I've read a few articles in recent years citing research that up to a third of traffic in some Boston neighborhoods are cars searching for parking. If that's true, then theoretically a new supply of parking spaces would address that problem. And if the % of cars on streets hunting for parking suddenly declines, then it should make a dent in aggregate traffic in our urban neighborhoods.

SBWTC is interesting because it's an above-ground garage, meaning it's physically visible to drivers from multiple streets and, therefore, may lure more cars to park there than other Seaport garages. Acknowledging that the price to park in the Seaport is stupid expensive (I paid $40 once for a couple hours), I think a lot of parking-seekers in the Seaport don't realize how many underground garage spaces there truly are in that neighborhood. It'd be great if the ParkBoston smartphone app integrated some sort of "Spots Available by Garage" feature that could encourage drivers to park at them.

The Seaport hotel garage is absolutely massive. It spans from B Street to D Street and is 3 levels. I've parked there for several years and almost never seen all 3 levels filled (after working hours). There are way more spots underground than anyone thinks.

I'm waiting for the article in a year or so that's titled, "Oversupply of Parking in Seaport - New Garage Under-performing"

Call me the outlier, but I think the amount of parking that will be added to this garage is excessive. Every new project in the Seaport provides new parking. Are there really that many people that are looking for parking in the Seaport and willing to pay a premium to park in a garage? Prove me wrong.

Remember who owns this garage - Massport. This garage isn't so much for the Seaport as it is for Logan Airport to help their immediate parking crisis until they can get their 5,000 space garage(s) built at Terminal E or expanding the Economy Garage.

So their solution is to add parking to a dense urban neighborhood . That can't be the cheapest option.

Well the cheapest option was to valet park 1,000 cars on every concrete surface within 1/2 mile of the airport...but they've already exercised that option.

And anyway it's not about cheap, it's about cash flow

Just noting that this isn't even an exaggeration.

I'd be skeptical that this garage will help with traffic, anecdotally from what I see in the financial district, it's the cheapskates who circle around and around hoping to find a cheap parking meter spot. There are usually parking spaces available in the expensive indoor parking garages.

What dense urban neighborhood do you see there? They're decking a highway in the middle of vacant lots. The garage will be enclosed by taller buildings on two sides.

it would be cool if they could invent some type of covering to hang over garages that would cause them to look less terrible, but still allow the toxic fumes to pass through.

You mean something like the Kinetic Facade that Arrowstreet put on the Central Parking Expansion at Logan?

The wood fins for this thing cannot come fast enough.
