Somerville Infill and Small Developments

Lowell St, former Somerville Hospital nursing dorm into 20 condos, rather sleek. The adjoining parking lot stays a parking lot.

Nice find - thx for sharing. I’ve been wondering forever if that building had good enough bones to repurpose instead of razing.

From the city councilor back in July 2021:

"The developer has decided he still wants to move forward with the project, and is now seeking to re-obtain the permits for effectively the exact same project as was previously approved. However, under our new zoning laws, the developer is legally required to hold at least two neighborhood meetings, and a consultation with the city's Urban Design Commission, before going to the Planning Board or permits, regardless of the fact that the project was approved years ago."

124 Highland Ave condos (formerly American Legion) - nice brick facade coming along. While it is an appliqué, it still looks great and definitely a step up from hardie board and the like.

just walked by it and... no. the mixed-color "brick" makes the project looks like it was built in the late '50s (and not in a cool MCM way). to whit:

Conway Park - they’re pouring some sort of perimeter foundation around the fields. Which I assume means the lead remediation work is complete? Also it seems they’re planning to reuse the playground equipment. While the fresh paint job looks nice, why spend millions on the project and not also spring for some new swings?

Progress at Conway Park - new grading, various upright structures for fencing, infield netting and …new scoreboards?

Nothing but impressed with the new HS! But particularly so with the renovation efforts of the old buildings. Such great material choices and finish qualities.

Agreed....BUT: who picked out those flood lights... like really? Did we all of a sudden run out of vendors providing tasteful ornamental lighting to local municipalities? Those belong in a prison yard. Ugh.

They have to save pennies somewhere to pay for the remediation on the field.

Conway Park is starting to look green again - turf this time. Better than before (no lead) and better than no field at all. But…will there be dirt infields for the baseball diamonds or just all turf?

I drove by the city hall complex a few weeks ago and had no idea there was all this construction there. Surprised there hasn’t been more posting of pics. There’s been a ton of work done and it looks great.
