I always wondered why they can’t close the streets for a few days and just take a wrecking ball to it. I’m sure there are good reasons, but it seems painfully drawn out how they were disassembling it.

You ever seen a wrecking ball work on reinforced concrete? Its slow going. I watched them take down the old St. V's hospital in Worcester a number of years ago and it was weeks/months of wrecking ball action.
 
Not to mention the train tunnels below. The collapse this weekend and impact on orange and green lines highlight this
