The Definitive ArchBoston Tall vs Small Debate Thread

^^^Ahhh yes, Berlin, which I only recognized because of the tower. A wonderful home base for quite possibly the most evil person in the history of this planet.

Also, there are a few taller buildings in that city, not pictured, and more being built.

Really? Seriously? My interest in anything you have to say just ended.

I apologize. I went a little bit overboard with that reference.

I just want to see some outward signs of progress in a city that has teased us with numerous stalled/cancelled proposals since before this website even started. It's 2014 fer cryin' out loud!

Open your eyes dude.... this is the Boston of today and it's doing better than it has in probably a hundred years.

Quit whining and start enjoying.

And two of the buildings in that picture were built by the same developer as millennium tower, I have high hopes

I would like some examples of great cities that BOTH:
A. don't have skyscrapers, and
B. weren't already great before the invention of skyscrapers. (let's say weren't great cities prior to 1900 for simplicity)

Ready? Go.

Austin, TX, which is now getting ruined by skyscrapers.

I would hesitate to say Austin, TX is getting ruined by skyscrapers. They are merely the by product of a city becoming great as Austin is seeing an influx boom of young professional. I head down there too if I was given the chance.

This is a great picture. How many filters did you have to put it through for it to look like this?

Let's discuss content for a moment...

MP3: Amazing glass wall! However, isn't the rest of the building generally considered less palatable? Also, you'd never know it was there unless you're within a block of it.

MP: Too old to be considered new.

The Kensington: The Kensington.

So basically, you are nullifying my skyline arguments with an enhanced picture of a 15 story building and The Kensington?

God you're so freaking smarmy and bitter...

I weep for all the people standing at the high points that surround the Shawmut Peninsula, disgusted at the stale, shit-stain of a skyline Boston has. Really it's amazing that anyone bothers to go up Blue Hill at all! Gross. Obviously we should be building our cities for the people looking at it from the suburbs. /snark

Look, I'd love to see more buildings of height built in Boston, but for goodness' sake, can the pitiful moaning about how every other city in the world is just so fab because they're building tall? Boston is provincial and height-phobic. That culture is s l o w l y changing. If you can't handle the pace, go to another city.

God you're so freaking smarmy...

Yes, I do in fact DESPISE one of the above posters, probably more than any other person on any other website except that they provide pictures (I like pictures).

There are 3 reasons to come to this site.
1. The pictures, aka the best reason
2. Facts, data, diagrams, news, etc
3. OPINIONS. We all have them, and many of us don't agree with each other. But the above poster has consistently written off my opinions with the wave of a hand. I'll research for an hour, find valid examples, compile all the data for people who may not know these things... and he waves it off like its worthless. Sure, I complain, but I back it up with hard facts and I work hard to support my arguments. So if I put in the effort, and somebody writes it off with an insult, then yes I am going to get nasty towards that person.

and bitter...

Don't blink or they'll delay all the projects another year. Of course I'm bitter. I expect that to (finally) change soon, but I have also been saying this for years, and years, and years. Each additional year makes me more bitter. It used to be the calling card of a Boston sports fan, so now I just rolled over my bitterness to my other love, skyscrapers.

Hahahaha you don't even know what a filter is! WOW dude. Keep digging that hole of yours...

Newsflash: fixing the blacks and whites so that blacks are blacks (and not washed out greys like your pics) and whites are whites does not mean I've put a filter on it.

I deleted that shot off my hard drive long ago so I can't pull up the original, but I have the shot taken just before to show you a bone stock dry, straight from the camera shot versus the final product. Witness:

95% of the time my camera does 95% of the work and all I have to do is extremely basic light level correcting. My camera is awesome, and my editing most of the time does not involve filters except for where I clearly messed with the colors.

I tried to encourage you before to play around with editing pics and I said you won't like the results at first, but apparently you didn't learn much of anything and in your lack of knowledge on the subject you now think that doing ANY editing is tantamount to applying an Instagram-like filter to it. No it isn't pal, no it isn't.

Once again you can't see what's right in front of you. That picture isn't about the Kensington, it's about the rebirth of a freaking neighborhood. The theatre district is healthier than it's been in decades, the Combat Zone has been wiped away for something better, our old buildings are getting the TLC they deserve, and there are new buildings bringing people to live where no person in their right mind would've lived even 15 years ago.

Dude, just take your bitter ass back to skyscrapercity and we'll all be better off.

You know why? Because I DON'T CARE about "X city has Y towers above Z height." That's great that Omaha has two 500 footers or whatever, good for them. That's great that Boston hasn't had 20 towers above 800 feet in 500 years and therefore something is horribly wrong with the city.

Maybe up to this point the other people here hadn't been as forthright as me in saying they don't care about your skyscraper facts but clearly they have now had it. WE DON'T CARE.

And your comparison of skyscrapers to the Red Sox is more than a little pathetic. You suffered over the Red Sox but now they're winning so you need something else to suffer over? Of course you're bitter? Wow dude.

Hahahaha you don't even know what a filter is! WOW dude. Keep digging that hole of yours...

Oh whoops, I used the incorrect terminology. Let's go nuts about it.

You can insult the quality of my pics, but most of yours are through trees or some other terrible angle. They just look good because you are a skilled editor with good equipment. But really, how many "avant garde" pictures of Longwood can a person take? Your camera is better than your eye for framing pictures.

You know why? Because I DON'T CARE....

If you DON'T CARE, then DON'T RESPOND TO THE POST. This is especially true given that you respond to gathered data with an opinion that you believe to be gospel. There are plenty of times where I don't care, like when everybody starts debating which is the best store from England or whatever. But you know what? I don't go overboard singling people out, until now anyway cause frankly your act has gotten as old with me as mine has with you. There are often pages upon pages of off-topic conversations that you delightfully take part in. Yet there can be an entire page of a conversation that I am interested in (and I'm not the ONLY one contrary to your misguided opinion) and yet you will jump in as if you are some holy moderator, to steer the conversation back to whatever garbage you think is "appropriate".

At least I can admit to what I am, a stubborn, opinionated, often abrasive asshole with an inner fire that runs especially hot for this particular subject matter. You, on the other hand, are the worst of the worst, because you think you're better than everybody else and your opinion is the only one that counts. Who made you the judge and jury? Your opinion isn't better than anybody else's.

Amen to that!

PS why u no like trees? :(

It's not that I'm a judge and jury, I'm just an opinionated asshole as well. And hey, there's some common ground! Let's duke it out and have a beer!

Not going to lie, I respect this answer. I have said this exact thing to people before... "Let's rent a ring/cage, beat the hell out of each other for a set amount of time, then shake hands and be friends." Never once did I have to follow through with that fight either... But hey, if you know where to rent one of these things, I'm only 5'8, about 170 pounds. (of course, tell me you're going to knock a bunch of floors off a proposal, and I'll come at you like the water boy)

I don't know, but maybe you're OK.

Haha, 6' and a scrappy 156 pounds. I CAN TAKE YOU!
