The New Retail Thread

Article says they're trying to relocate Clarke's somewhere else in the station. Not sure where there's space for it though. Maybe one of the second floor spots?

And the Clark's bar in South Station is to be turned into a CVS:

Sad to see this bar go - always packed with people waiting for their train.

This sucks so much. This bar is a great place to go if you miss your train. It always seems busy. We need another damn CVS like a hole in the head. There is great value in having a place to grab a beer where you are very close to your departure. South Street Cafe would be next closest, I guess and while it has its own special atmosphere, I would rather stay inside the station, thanks. As for promises to try to relocate it, I am skeptical.

Semass -- I like Clarks, but a CVS inside South Station can be a great value for someone who forgot critical things before traveling. An up-stairs Clarks also might be interesting if it has the right views.

CVS will also work with commuters who use South Stations to interconnect between the Red Line, Silver Line and CR -- a CVS or Walgreens is for miscelaneous things a commuter would need to pick-up before catching the train -- just like the Au Bon Pain is for a quick snack or coffee

Finally the CVS at South Station -- like the Walgreen at the Borders in DTX will be of great value to the new local residents who need something like a CVS to feel "at home." Indeed -- in the 24 hours in Kendall piece of a year ago -- the lack of a CVS/Walgreens in Kendall was a downer for some

Yes, CVS is needed in Kendall Square. It is not needed in South Station where there are 4 or 5 within a quarter-mile walk.

In good news:

Furniture chain Room & Board plans to open a Newbury Street store next year

By Chris Reidy, Globe Staff

Room & Board, a Minnesota-based chain of about a dozen US stores, said it plans to open a multilevel store in Boston in late 2013.

The new 39,000-square-foot store, Room & Board’s first in New England, will be located at 407 Newbury St. at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue, the company said.

Room & Board, which specializes in what it describes as “modern American-made furniture and accessories,” said it will occupy the entire building, which was commissioned for construction by the estate of Henry Lee in 1908. The building’s neighbors include the Harvard Club and the Eliot Hotel.

“A new, modern glass structure will be added to the rear,” the chain said in a press release. “The building will also include a quaint, second-floor terrace and a sidewalk area that will display a selection of modern furniture and accessories from the company’s outdoor collection.”

Boston Urban Partners and Tegra Group represented Room & Board in its search to identify the property, which is owned by Kensington Investment Co.

The Minneapolis office of the global architecture firm Gensler will work with Room & Board on the store’s interior design, the company said.

Surprised no one here's remarked that the Harvard Square cinema is closing...

It's on the board somewhere. There was a discussion about a new home for Rocky Horror.

EDIT: Here it is.

And not about the dearth of first-run film options between Fresh Pond and central Boston now? I'd be amazed if Harvard didn't find a way to bring them back, though I would imagine they'd probably seek out more of an arthouse like the Kendall cinema and wind up positioning it in Allston Square to kickstart development there.

The first comment is hilarious:

SmellEDskiLater

another parking garage employed by illegals...

beautiful!

etc...

I have no fucking idea what that means (how can illegals employ an inanimate object?), but it's hilarious.

I'm pissed off still and I'm glad to see it made it here about the frikken CVS going into SS. And, either closing or moving Clark's.

Clark's belongs there and CVS does not. Quick kiosks with magazines and coke and newspapers are needed. And, they already exist.

If I have a long wait for a train, the bar is much better than a bunch of people standing in the CVS magazine dept. reading for free while waiting for their trains.

Bad move all around, when there are plenty of CVS' all around. This might be sacrilige, but put in a DD before a CVS. Quick in and out like you expect in major transit hubs. A newport News or whatever like the airport has with things you might need like headphones, lighters, trail mix, etc. belongs here, not a full blown drugstore.

It deserved better than this.
