The Quinn (née The Berkeley) | 370-380 Harrison Ave | South End

I actually liked this design a lot. Where was this commission when crap like The Kensington, Waterside Place, and the blank black wall of 45 Province were getting pushed through?!

What were the main criticisms here?

Need someone who has access behind the BBJ paywall to find out.

Those were all approved in the Menino era weren't they? I dont always agree with everything Mahty does but he did emphasize more architecturally interesting/ higher quality buildings didnt he?

I agree. I think if they use the same quality materials they are currently using at Lovejoy, this would look great.

i second that. i assume the 20 story tower has been knocked down to 7 or 8? that's ridiculous given the state that Boston is in. Much the same as 1 Greenway, a 255' crown for the neighborhood with improved, Late Victorian cladding would have been awesome. i'll be talking about this malfeasance for the next 6 months in the Globe. the developer should return with 19 stories and the right skin.

I'd like to see you try meditation.

i whiffed on that one going for it a little, but instead confusing 370-380 Harrison Ave with Berkeley Investment's 20 story-255' apartment tower at 7 Channel Center/Ft Point.

New renders & plans.

I honestly wonder if the low quality of the initial renders was part of the problem.

How is this new iteration superior to the last one? I thought the massing and use of materials was far better in the original. Now we get a big monolithic mass extending the whole length of the block at the top.

The BCDC is maddeningly arbitrary.

i too preferred the first iteration, by a lot.

I'll take the newer version. This was going to be a superblock no matter what but the first version is a massive overdose of brick. The glass and ground floor pass thru lighten things up considerably, it now has more Utile and less Stern.
