Shortening the name and adding "Vegas" at the end is popular in Northern New England. An ex lived in Skowhegan, ME and they all called it "Skow Vegas." When I asked, "why" she said it was because of the strip (referring to the retail area with Walmart).

New Bedford- "New Beige"

Fall River- "The Riv"

Worcester- "Worchester." I know that's the improper pronunciation, but I hear a number of people do it intentionally.

Provincetown- "P-Town."

Lesser known- Assonet- "Ass On It"

Freetown/Lakeville- "Freeville" (often by college students/ recent grads who have moved away).

Don't forget Newbeffet. Where did New Beige even come from? My whole family has always used it and we aren't even Portuguese.

Cambridge/Somerville taken together - Camberville or Cambriville

No idea. My family moved to MA from the DC area (via Providence) and don't have an ounce of Portuguese in us. We always said, "New Beige" too.

I don't understand the 'Vegas' thing, since none of these towns have ever had casinos.

Worcester, MA - more recently / rebranded "the Woo" (seems more popular amongst the college kids in the area

Waltham - Watch City
Cambridge - variations on the People's Republic
Winchendon - Toy Town

Brockton- City of Champions
(more a slogan than nickname, but still)

One of Buffalo's big inner-ring suburbs pulls the ----Vegas trick too. I think it's just meant as a way to poke fun at the perceived tackiness of an area, as in "I'm living it up in beautiful Cheektovegas baby!!"

From my experiences that isn't so much a nickname as an actual expression of how many of the people in the area speak. Another one that seems to be catching on for that region is 'the bayou' (apologies to Marion, Westport and the few parts of Dartmouth that haven't turned into complete shit).

Anyone else here know of Jewton? Or is that only how Jews such as myself (lovingly) refer to it...!

^^ Of course! Then I'm from Brookline, so we know about these types of things.

I'd also like to submit that people do actually refer to Boston as Beantown, or The Bean...just not suburban white folk, or urban transplants - i.e., those who vehemently insist that NOBODY calls it Beantown.

I've heard a trashy girl call Billerica 'Rica. And I believe Salem is Witch City.
