USPS Complex | Fort Point

Re: South Station Tower

Was this an email sent to you or is it posted on the website? I can't seem to find it. Thanks!

Re: South Station Tower

Received an e-mail.

I think they are reaching out to the South Boston / Fort Point neighborhoods with the 1st series of early community meetings in advance of broader public process. But it's a public meeting so anyone can attend.

Re: South Station Tower

Thanks for the info..

Gorgeous proposal ... it would be great if they could find a way to bring light down to the tracks/platforms, but what a smart idea for the channel

But yes ... no way it'll ever happen ;)

Re: South Station Tower

Now that's my idea of Manhattanization! Thanks for the post.

Re: South Station Tower

That link includes the South Station Tower in white, blending it with the rest of the existing financial district. The tallest building in that proposal looks about 500'. Yes, please build this! On the same render, does anybody know what the big white block towers are to the very left? I'm pretty sure those don't exist...

Also, on the same site, has anybody seen this render of Fan Pier?

Re: South Station Tower

^ That actually looks pretty similar to what's been proposed for that site.

What's the box between the towers? One can only dream that they would consider providing space for ICA expansion there...

Re: South Station Tower

Holy Moly photo #5 on the USPS proposal is AMAZING!!!!! I have never seen any of these renders before! Hopefully ANY of them get built!

Re: South Station Tower

Is the USPS site propsal the same as the gateway area or am I wrong?

It isn't. I'm almost positive the massing of Gateway Center can be seen in pictures 1 & 3, just West of the Southern-most buildings.

Either way, this is f-ing incredible. Absolutely amazing. It would be so fantastic if this was built as-is...but there's basically zero to negative chance that it ever happens.

Can we at least get a kickstarter going for that pedestrian bridge across the channel?

In all seriousness though, this is an amazing concept, and if nothing else maybe it can serve as a guide to what's possible there. I would love to see Boston make more of its waterfront. I'm not saying people need to be swimming everywhere, but folks sailing/kayaking/boating in general and some pedestrian/bike crossings to get both sides of places like Fort Point seeing some action would be nice.

I think members of this site should start a communal pool to buy lotto tickets, with proceeds going towards funding for awesome projects like this concept. I'm only half kidding.

Re: South Station Tower

CBT really does wonderful work. They are by far my favorite. It is highly unfortunate that their incredible proposals get used for nothing more than propaganda and when something is eventually built, value-engineered to death.

Re: South Station Tower

I've seen these renders elsewhere on the site, can't remember exactly where, though. I think it's a fairly serious proposal, but apparently the post office no contemplate to vacate the site, so, DOA.

I realize it's entirely conceptual, there's no chance that it will see the light of day and accordingly there's little reason to discuss its merits, but I figured it couldn't hurt to see what could have been.

Gotta Bostonize it to make it viable:

- Remove every other building from the plan, and replace it with grass.

- Reduce the height of every remaining building by 50%

- Plant a handful of saplings in such a way that they will eventually provide shade exclusively to cars driving by.

- Construct 6,000 parking spaces.

I posted a meeting notice yesterday on this thread.

A meeting held by MassDOT with the BRA in attendance to discuss USPS parcels and South Station is not a regular occurrence. It is a strong indication of forward motion by all parties including USPS, albeit at a snail's pace.

It looks great, except that Dorchester Ave should be full width along the shoreline, open to public traffic as a landscaped boulevard. Dorchester Ave has been blocked for decades by the USPS facility, and reestablishing it would knit the area back together.

Paddle boats from in front of the Children's Museum.

How hard would that be right now? And why has it not been done yet?

Excellent idea. It would be easy in most other cities. It hasn't been done because it's too good an idea.
