Filling in an empty plaza, expanding a wildly-successful mall, and building the city's tallest residential building is the definition of progress I'm using.

Lst time i looked Boston / Cambridge was becoming the home base for R&D for the global pharmaceutical industry -- i can't recall all of the other important cities but I don't think that OKC or Hahtfd were on the list

I am not saying that a taller tower makes a place like OKC suddenly better than Boston. FAR from it, and anybody who inferred that should try jumping to more reasonable conclusions.

What I AM saying is that it seems that so many of these inferior cities have been having beautiful, amazing developments that they can be proud of from the 21st century. Ignoring our obvious dominance over these cities from street level, when you zoom out a bit it seems like many of them are changing for the better (and taller, why are so many people here against taller?) while we have been pretty stagnant on the "looks" front. I am tired of hearing ad nauseaum that "Boston is a better city" and thus "new large development is unnecessary".

If that is so true, how come a city like London has either built or is building 17 of it's 19 tallest buildings since 2000, and all 19 since 1980? Don't they have a dense, historic city that some could argue is MUCH more dense, historic, and important than Boston? Are they foolish for wanting to grow their city and skyline, and embrace the future of their city in the 21st century?

You all sound like NIMBY's. If you don't want to experience growth, go move to the rust belt somewhere... just not Cincinnati, because they just built their new tallest.

You couldn't be further from the truth. I don't think anybody is saying no to growth or tall buildings. What we are saying is that Boston doesn't need to stake its status as a world class city on a 1,000 foot building. One sign of greatness is not needing to thump our chests or stroke ourselves in front of others.

Thx. This is essentially the point I was making. The conclusions that were jumped to about yours and my posts were pretty ridiculous

From what I heard at today's event at the BPL, don't expect a tallest any time soon. People think height is going to kill the street life, bunch of losers if you ask me. Need to get a grip.

I would settle for a new 3rd tallest. Although I would like to mention.... (maybe this next part should be broken off into a new thread)

I figured out exactly what I would personally like to see as our new tallest. I also think it would look perfect on the site of the ill-fated "Tommy's Tower". How about a sleek glass tower, in the range of 900' or so, shaped like an obelisk (obviously with friendly enough dimensions to house the offices/residential/whatever, think of maybe the top third of a typical obelisk). Since it rises to a point, the 900' wouldn't completely overshadow all of the 500'-600' towers around it, and it would reflect the financial district in the same way as the Hancock reflects Back Bay.

Basically, it would pay homage to the Hancock Tower, to the rest of city by reflecting it, and to our already decent collection of obelisks such as the Zakim Bridge, Bunker Hill, a small pair in Copley, and I think one on the common... maybe there are more? Also, it would be the world's tallest obelisk. Imagine seeing this new beacon rising up among the downtown skyscrapers? I imagine it every time I see city...

Huh? You're the one complaining about Boston. Now you're suggesting others move because... they don't like Boston's growth, which according to you doesn't exist. That's difficult to make sense of. Based on this thread it would make more sense for you move to Oklahoma so you can have your new tower.

To be clear, I like towers. In fact, I think 95% of the people on this site (myself included) would love to see Boston get a new tallest building. This is not a site full of NIMBYs. I just think our reasons vary. I like towers because they're an efficient use of land and energy and because when done right they can be breathtaking. I'm not concerned with the "mine is bigger that yours" dick-wagging contest.

Why on Earth would anybody want to move to OKC? The only point I have been trying to make is that we have all these dogshit cities building worldclass developments, while our worldclass city tends to settle for dogshit development. Isn't there something a little wrong with that? Just because Boston doesn't need to validate itself, doesn't mean it shouldn't try to grow and become better (street level, skyline, attract business, significantly more residential).

The new tower in OKC is going to look stupid. It's going to be a giant amongst parking lots and 10 story stubs.

And you are right, who the hell would ever want to move to Oklahoma? Talk about a boring and bland state.

So apparently Bostonians don't believe in having a cake and eating it too. Why can't we do both? Many of the world's most successful cities can balance both density and height. Apparently from the posts here, Boston cannot.

Fixed.

And it's not even about accusing members here of being NIMBYs, it's the fact that many do not believe that Boston can't do both. Corporations are fleeing the city due to the high commercial which can drop if there was more office space in the city. Great modern cities did not become great by being satisfied with what they have. Great modern cities became great because they are never satisfied and is always in pursuit to become even better.

There's a public meeting tonight at the BPL for this project 6pm to 8pm, The Boston Room. There are a few more details on the BRA website. I'm gonna try to make the first half of the meeting.
