Canopy by Hilton (née Haymarket Hotel) | Blackstone St | Parcel 9 | Greenway

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

Is it me or were the lowrise portions of each scaled down quite a bit? Whose idea was it to line the Greenway with a two-story structure?

Blackstone wins for the architecture of the lowrise portion (Normandy's looks like the Seaport InnovaShed), but they should use Normandy's sign. Shame for trying to steal the spotlight and/or rebrand Haymarket with a new name.

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

Innovation Center was my first thought when I saw the jiggety jaggedy roof. Do not like.
I do however like the big Haymarket Sign. Little surprised I like that.

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

IIRC all of the proposals essentially had 2-3 story lowrise sections

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

Blackstone Please.

Digging the cow on the sign... symbolism for the meat markets around Faneuil Hall..?

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

The density of these proposals would be low for some suburban TOD. For the middle of downtown Boston it's absolutely ridiculous.

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

So we have two pathetically low density options. One a reincarnation of City Hall Plaza as a public market and two a Seaport District Coop Himmelblau reject competing for prime space along the world's most expensive median strip.

WORLD CLASS!

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

As eager as I am to have this parcel developed, it is very underwhelming. I don't like Balckstone's stumpiness, but it might bring more folks in.

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

My understanding is that these are as low / low density as they are because they are sited directly above the callahan ramp tunnel. Bigger / taller may not in fact be an option. Given that, aren't these (and the blackstone proposal in particular) a pretty darn good addition to pedestrian-focused zone in this part of town (as an aside, wouldnt it be amazing if it stretched up salem st and canal st at some point as well??) Wouldnt it be excellent to open up the interior of the blackstone block as an intimate pedestrian experience? To frame the southwest edge of the north end parks?

Its not possible to go big here. But these are taking it to the (pedestrian) streets, and that's something to celebrate, right?

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

I'm just thankful we'll have a streetwall here instead of greenspace facing the greenway...

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

Were the lighted signs a requirement or something? I'm really not a fan of either of the signs, although I do prefer the Blackstone proposal.

I agree with czsz about rebranding Haymarket, regarding Blackstone- bad idea.

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

I don't object to the name 'Blackstone', given that it's the name of both the developer and a directly abutting street. The name is older than Haymarket, as it belonged to someone who lived on the Shawmut peninsula before Boston was even founded.

Blackstone was the guy living in Boston when Winthrop, et. al. showed up. They originally settled in Charlestown because Blackstone had everything on the Shawmut Peninsula. Charlestown turned out to be infested with mosquitoes, so Blackstone invited them all down to Boston, and then I believe he took off for the interior.

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

HISTORY.

Given more context, I'm more accepting of it. I thought it was just a corporation name or similar.

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

Exactly. As long as nobody tries to call it Blackstone Square, because we've already got one of those, in the South End.

Rev. Blaxton was an Anglican minister who invited the Puritans to stay on his land when Charlestown proved less suitable. They generously allowed him to keep 50 acres. The Puritans disliked his theology, the Puritan court ordered his house burned, and he "took off" for Rhode Island. Got to love religious extremists.

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

... and subsequently returned to town riding a bull ...

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

What does a durable roadway finish entail?

The entire length of Blackstone Street will be made level and flush with vehicular ramps
at either end. We have budgeted a durable roadway finish for the central portion of the
Street for HPA set up and Fire Lane access

Re: Parcel 9 - The Greenway

I think that both proposals are actually quite good, especially in relation to the rest of the Blackstone/Haymarket block. In relation to the Greenway they are horrific, but this isn't the fault of these proposals, it's the enduring fault of the Greenway itself.
