General Electric HQ (Necco Buildings Reno) | 5 Necco Street | Fort Point

Re: General Electric HQ | Necco St.| Fort Point

I wonder if it goes on top of the Massport Gara--er, Seaport Transportation Center just to REALLY drive that moniker home. That being said, it's a bit silly to think that (barring traffic) you're basically halfway to the airport from new GE headquarters if you drive across the 'hood to get to your chopper to Logan. Hanscom obviously a different story.

SouthEnder --A helicopter is likely to be used for local GE to GE as in GE Marlborough where GE Healthcare Life Sciences, a major unit of GE Healthcare has established its HQ

I would think that a lot of GE corporate jets will be based at Hanscom as it has much easier flight issues than Logan

Re: General Electric HQ | Necco St.| Fort Point

!!Breaking news!!

According to unreliable sources, negotiators have identified a new leading candidate for the location of GE's planned heliport. GE and city officials indicated satisfaction with the easy accessibility from their new headquarters location, and said that the direct connectivity to longer-distance air transport was an unexpected bonus. The price tag for establishing GE helicopter service is expected to be much lower than was previously anticipated.

"Why didn't we think of this earlier?," asked several powerful people who sadly don't exist in reality.

Still to be confirmed...

Actually think the helicopter will be used much more for regional travel. It may even act as a de facto shuttle to Crotonville, Schenectady, NYC, regional speaking events (Dartmouth comes to mind), probably Cape and Islands in the summer. I'm sure it will be based out of Hanscom so it will fly to and from there locally when picking up passengers

On the planes, I agree I think they will keep JI plane at Logan and the rest of the local fleet at Hanscom.

Re: General Electric HQ | Necco St.| Fort Point

My first post, I've been a silent reader for a few years now. woo!

I work in Channel Center and use the parking lot everyday for my walk to and from work. This week they have been blocking off a few spots throughout the parking lot to do borehole testing. Figured I'd update everyone that the initial engineering work is progressing on this project.

Thanks DDay! And welcome!

GE is moving fast -- but boreholes when there isn't even a glimmer of a render for the actual building -- seems a bit early

Remember -- GE has announced it will be open for business in its temporary HQ on Farnsworth St in August, with the permanent facility to open sometime in 2018

Any helicopters taking off or landing in the vicinity of Logan would have to be in contact with the tower at Logan. Would be interesting to hear if the FAA has any feedback... whether it is better to have the pads on the flight path so they follow it or well away from the flight path so they don't interfere with it.

Re: General Electric HQ | Necco St.| Fort Point

The fort point channel is already a designated helicopter flight path.

Basically I just think it's bonkers to put a helipad at ground level in the middle of the city, unless (maybe) it's in the middle of the south cove interchange - which would be only marginally more convenient than Logan itself (where there are existing helicopter operations of course.) Even if they put it on top of a new building, it's going to be mighty loud and disruptive unless the building is 15+ floors or so, which I don't think is in the works. And having something floating in the channel is just as bad - there's been a lot invested in making the channel an active pedestrian friendly area, even all the way down by its south end, and a helipad would just be really really unpleasant. I hope they rethink this, but I don't think they will.

Maybe they can rent the top floor of the channel center garage?

At least put it on top of a building or in the middle of the highway, please!! (And seriously if at Logan ge would be able to offer 'connecting flights' for its global personnel to Schenectady, Erie PA etc from anywhere in the country or the world ... Places not well served by commercial air traffic

CSTH -- there's a nice spot at the end of what was called the Subaru Pier before the Ted Williams Tunnel construction -- sits on an open spot with only water on one side and no tall buildings and no tourists

Re: General Electric HQ | Necco St.| Fort Point

Where that blue-roof industrial building is for sale? Given the industrial zoning and the proximity to existing airplane noise I actually wouldn't have much of a problem with that...

Re: General Electric HQ | Necco St.| Fort Point

First conceptual Render of GE HQ interior from a GE site -- basically seems to follow how Jeff Immelt described entering the front door of Global Digital Industrial HQ

Re: General Electric HQ | Necco St.| Fort Point

What is this building and why isn't it the perfect spot for a helipad?

Re: General Electric HQ | Necco St.| Fort Point

I was staying in a hotel room facing the old GE building in Manhattan last year. I fell in love with it. I kept staring at it. Sorry... after seeing that image of it I had to share my infatuation with it to you all.

The W? The top of the old NY is gorgeous at night

Re: General Electric HQ | Necco St.| Fort Point

Strangest skyline image for Boston I think I've ever seen in here.

By the way == thanks to Muck Raking Internet Journalists and FOIA there is now an archive of hundreds [nearly 1000] e-mails connected with "Project Plum" -- aka the wooing of GE

https://www.muckrock.com/foi/boston-3/communications-with-ge-23771/

much of it is people setting up phone tags and such -- but there are a bunch of power point slide shows and such that tell you nearly everything that you ever wanted to know about Boston and in particular the Seaport / Innovation District

for example #776 -- dated about when the annoucement was made
https://d3gn0r3afghep.cloudfront.net/foia_files/2016/04/07/FOIA_GE_Project_Plum_00766.pdf

Interestingly enough -- no one thought to suggest the two empty Gillette buildings bordering on the edge of the huge Gillette parking lot -- the actual new GE HQ

It was private property that was not for sale so it would have been tough to offer a site as potential that you didn't really have any influence or sway over...A.G. Lafley was on GE Board of Directors for a long time before stepping down a few years ago so I think he has a very close relationship with GE leadership team and this was probably a pretty quick phone call to close this.

Novacat -- if you look at some of the early e-mails you see they floated all kinds of ideas from existing developments [Hub on Causeway with giant GE Logo] to the Mass DOT site, and things that were just spots on the map

It would have been easy to imagine the edge of the Fort Point Channel in the midst of that sea of Gillette Parking
