Whigh I am pretty sure everyone on here is aware the world is transforming and how that transformation has been affecting Boston. Using language like GNUrd does not further that message. Also there are books written about every time and place change is the one constant in human society and while change is happening very rapidly now that has been the case for hundreds of years. Your own post acknowledges this is a continuation of trends that are centuries old and also is not contributing to any meaningful or substantive discussion of the actual project here. Also GNU is not a talisman to the process it is just one form of free open source software. Is it important? Yes, but it is not the only important thing happening and Boston in general is much more focused on biotech, pharmaceuticals, and robotics than consumer facing software development. GNU may be used in some of these projects but it isn't the only option and it has absolutely no recognized mystical or spiritual properties as you have implied.

Bakqwailo -- glad to know that you are a GNU cognescenti
then why the following

Amazon competes with Google as the home of the largest concentration of local software developers [and perhaps Mathworks, Akamai, and a couple of other home-grown companies]

I'm sure that if you nicknamed the facility currently under construction in the Seaport Square complex to be known as 111 Harbor Way, Seaport Square aka GNUrdHouse -- you would find a quite positive resonance @ the GNU reference

ditto to 325 Main St., Kendall Square aka GNUrdHouse

We just need to see which one gets occupied first to append something creative such as New or Next in front of the name

Jesus.

....and btw, I could care less about the "gnurd" term. It's the constant and useless waste of everyone's time that the (apparently) lonely Whighlander requires to fill his day and waste everyone else's.......

Seriously, would it kill you to allow a thread to stay on topic????? If you so badly need attention, get a pet.

The rest of us are here to learn about the development of this Amazon office building in the Seaport..

Citylover -- you take things to literally
There are many levels here -- and all are part of the story of Boston/Cambridge in the post WWII era
I guess I've been privileged to have lived through a lot -- a real lot of what has been happening and to be cognizant at a fairly deep level of what is going on

Simply -- the progress in computing during my cognizant lifetime [essentially beginning with the invention of the Integrated Circuit] through today -- that progress in one human lifetime -- measured any way you want to -- is equivalent to the some other transformations which required Millenia

To a very real way -- it essentially started here - had a couple of bad decades when "Silicon Valley" was all the rage -- well the work underway in our region is once again -- Head and Shoulders above nearly all else

GNU -- which is much more than just a name -- its a recursive pun -- is part of that story
and so is the term GNUrd -- just in the same way as there are two totally dissimilar and unrelated connotations attached to a single word -- unionized -- one of which separates the cognoscente from the rest

For someone who tries so hard to sound intelligent, using the wrong "to" is just fucking embarrassing
Suffolk --- go pick some more significant nits
Citylover -- you take things to literally
I never claimed to be particularly good at proof reading my own typing -- if it wasn't for spell check, etc. -- I would spew a lot of hard to understand stuff -- unfortunately, spell check doesn't always fix things such as using to for two -- that happens

Equilibria -- this is just more proof that the Innate concentration of High Intelligence resident in Cambridge [both the day-only, as well as the people living in Cambridge] -- never diffuses into the political class in Cambridge.

The litany of idiotic statements by the Cambridge City Council is legendary:
  1. Tried to ban recombinant DNA technology
  2. when they got over the DNA thing --- they then Freaked out because Arthur D. Little wanted to do some Disarmament related research with involved some small samples of Nuclear Materials [weapons-grade to be sure]
  3. Then doing some kind of survey -- they discovered that there were radioactive substances already inside the City limits in use in Bio and Chemistry Labs @ Harvard & MIT -- some of which [very low level] got dumped down the drains into the Cambridge Sewers
    1. Apparently never associated the Cooling Tower & the Big Concrete Dome @ Albany & Mass Ave with the Nuclear Reactor housed within
    2. Also apparently ignorant of Nuclear Medicine being practiced in the Cambridge Hospital

Idiots -- Cambridge's Citizenry always manages to elect at least one Absolute Idiot to the City Council

Oh, stop with this drivel. The anarchists don't swarm the streets every night when each and every single one of Kendall's Bestest and Brightingest™ exits the Alewife rotary at 6:00 sharp in the densest-by-brainpower fucking traffic jam God in his wildest dreams ever created to drive home to their Google home-automated abodes in Acton every night. Jesus Christ...who spends so much of their time jerking off to this kind of fantasy? I guarantee I have watched hundreds more hours of Council meetings on CCTV than you from my nightly insomnia habit over a collective greater-than decade as a City resident. It is no more or less fraught a body politic than any other place of similar size or complexity. Just as the mixture of the City's populous is a whole lot more diverse in background and interest to make anyone who actually lives there want to waste their fucking time daydreaming up this whole Earth Three alt-universe slavish bootlicking in wonderment to just how gosh-darn Innovativer-than-thou those Kendall boys are and how we can be more like them. There's too much shit to do on those streets than spending all day blowing rhetorical bubbles.

Cambridge is not MIT. The fact that it is quite very comfortable not Borg-assimilating with the brains is neither bug nor feature of Cambridge. It just is. While I have long shared the puzzlement of many fellow Cantabrigians as to how and why Alewife ended up the planning Twilight Zone that induces such instantaneous brainlock with local institutions, in general dev decisions there are the same "Win Some, Lose Some, But Win More Than You Lose And Trundle Forward" proposition as they are damn near everywhere. Not always a joy to watch getting hashed out, but the hits continue to outnumber the misses after a couple decades of swings. If anything the comparably very weak city government makes the use of hyperbole in Council meetings a quirky local way of working the whip count, but there are no more or less born idjits slipping through on election day than anywhere else. Boston is where they kept finding excuses to let Bill Linehan occupy space every 2 years...not Cambridge.

Though you know Cambridge Council meetings have refreshingly few of? ."Old Man Yells At Cloud"-type characters speaking up to soapbox barely-concealed tangents of outright bigotry amid an ostensibly NIMBY stump speech. You know...that type of archetypically suburban animal. Who every once in awhile ends up getting himself elected to town gov't in a bottom-barrel participation townie election, where he then keeps making the news only for the horrible things that keep spilling out of his mouth alongside the drool. You know, I can't recall Cambridge ever electing a real Dapper O'Neil caricature, or one of his many MAGA hat-wearing offspring proliferating in the burbs' today. Voter turnout continues to be a touch high enough to cut down those weirdos early.

F-line -- No one said that you were involved in any of the examples of "Shear Idiocy" which I posted
All did in fact happen -- and all were if not driven -- they were certainly exacerbated by Cambridge Pols
I also observed all of them real-time mostly from my perch at MIT

Full disclosure -- while I live in Lexington not Cambridge -- I think that I have a fairly Cantabridgian connection:
  1. My Grandfather [father's side] lived in Somerville as a youngish man recently arrived from Central Europe -- worked on building the Lechmere Viaduct
  2. My Father was born in the Cambridge Hospital and lived in East Cambridge while he attended BU
  3. My Aunt [Father's older sister] lived in Cambridge for nearly 5 decades
  4. My first trip outside of the Hartford Area where I grew up was to visit my Aunt in Cambridge [I was about 5 at the time]
  5. A few years later I spent a good fraction of a summer living in Cambridge
    1. in my Aunt's house
    2. visiting the MOS [nearly daily] and Fenway quite a few times using Public Transport on my own
      1. including the then Trackless Trolley running along Cambridge St.
  6. I lived in Cambridge while attending MIT
    1. in a dorm during the academic year, and in my Aunt's house during the summers
    2. I walked to MIT across the then essentially empty fields formerly the home of lots of industry leveled for the NASA Electronics Research Center
      1. before the NASA Buildings became the DOT's Volpe Center
    3. I've followed the development of those empty fields essentially continuously for five decades
  7. Both of my brothers lived in Cambridge while attending MIT
    1. in the same manner as I had some years before
  8. I have a cousin who currently lives in Cambridge
    1. in the multifamily house formerly owned by my Aunt

So I think I have an adequate Cambridge Connection to address these issues

You aren't "addressing" anything. You're crap-bombing threads off-topic with egregious smarm. MULTIPE threads at once. Again.

This shit is what we have a "Please Stop" dumping ground for. Get a new hobby if you are too bored this weekend to engage discussion with even a feignt of intellectual honesty.

As others have pointed out -- You "Shir" -- might make a lot more progress getting people to listen to your enormous amount of "Good Stuff" about the T, etc, -- If you just didn't feel obligated to address everyone who disagrees with you or even just doesn't bow to you with a some sort of insult

The points I was making are valid -- unless you can point to counter-veiling information -- all you seem capable of delivering is an ad hominem attack
I doubt that you can challenge my family's personal involvement with Cambridge

No one is talking about your family in Cambridge except you in your latest thread-derail. Wrapped around your chronic dripping ad hominems to other posters, which are careening to another new high this week. If you're going to do such a transparently bad job of moving goalposts...try lifting with your legs instead of your back for a change.

This started off with you hijacking an on-topic news story about one single Council member's one-time marble-mouthed quote on a lab space proposal. A cringey quote indeed, but where Eq managed to critique it wholly on-point and within the context of land usage on the properties in question you had to go off on a bender about rampant science denialism on the Council that not only--despite the faithful wiki-list formatting--failed to offer factual substantiation to any one of its wildly off-topic claims...but also proceeded to tie it in knots claiming that had to be the work of some unnamed 'other' class of dunderheads in the electorate because clearly the superior brainiacs could never be responsible for that being some sort of 'apart' (read: commuter) entity of their own.

Which is a giant huffing ignorant load of bullflop as a statement, rank with arrogant classism first...total bewilderance to how city government works, second. It got exactly the response it deserved. Whining about your genetic ties to the City does not distract from the fact that such brazen ignorance came out your own head vomited through your own keyboard in an attempt to drag further off-topic the incredibly stupid off-topic digression you started. Which you are--similarly true to form--doing simultaneously on several other threads today to try and divide-and-conquer around the fact that you feel one more like rubbing the board's face in your bad behavior streak.

Same whigh-spam shit, different bored-and-shiftless weekend. How many pages longer do you feel like growing the "Please Stop" thread in this latest, greatest return from board hiatus before it gets too tedious to sustain? Nothing ever changes with this behavior. If you have nothing better to do than implicitly tell aB to go fuck itself by drowning it in pointless distraction, do not complain when that sentiment is returned in-kind in considerably more direct fashion.

If we all ignored him(as I am) maybe he’ll stop.

He won't. And the mods obviously won't step in.

I see there is an "Ignore " function in the Preferences area, but every time I go there it just says that I have no one on ignore and gives no visual option to add someone.

Does anyone have the directions for using this function so I can finally be free of the time waste of Whighlander's posts? Any help would be much appreciated.

You can click on their name in one of the posts above and a window will appear with some member stats and the option to follow or ignore.

I've had him on ignore for years, along with our resident tall building fetishist. F-Line - it will lower your blood pressure.

Time for someone to suggest that just as in the case of Pharma & core Tech that the US [or at least North America] needs a fully reliable supply chain for key transportation infrastructure

That means from raw Steel and Aluminum through to the finished products rolling along our roads and rails -- and the of course the roads and rails themselves

Let China compete with Vietnam and Bangladesh making sneakers and kitchen utensils

Wow...racist much on a Wednesday morning?
