Note these are a few months old but Massport doesn't post slide decks until months after the meetings unfortunately, so they just released February.

Our persistent blindness with COVID was really unfortunate. Look at this slide from mid-Feb.

Big MassPort News in the Globe:

"Massport makes major cutbacks in Logan Airport construction plans in response to industry downturn
The expansion of Terminal E is being reduced by nearly half, while new parking garages and a people mover to the T are on hold."

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/06...onstruction-plans-response-industry-downturn/
Sensible moves, air travel will likely see the slowest recovery. Interesting that the headlines mentions the people mover given that wasn't even in this phase of construction.

However -- a positive as well:
Massport Accelerates Runway Safety Work at Logan Airport
May 08, 2020
Taking advantage of reduced activity to speed up needed project

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is accelerating a runway rehabilitation and safety improvement project at Boston Logan International Airport in order to take advantage of this period of historically low flight activity nationwide. In collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the airlines that serve Boston, Massport will begin work on Runway 9-27 later this month with an accelerated 73-day timeline and full runway closure..... Prior to the travel impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Runway 9-27 project was slated to start in August 2020, near the end of the peak summer travel season. With reduced air traffic, moving up the project will reduce community overflights and minimize impacts to the traveling public......

The runway is expected to reopen in early August.

Hopefully -- Massport and MA DOT can find more projects to accelerate over the next 6 months as things are just now starting to return to previous levels of activity

JeffDowntown -- interesting there is no specific announcement on the Massport News area -- but the Logan Forward Terminal E page has been adjusted to only mention 4 New Gates -- although the image still shows 7 Gates in the new part of Term E

Improvements:

We are modernizing the facilities at Boston Logan's international Terminal E to ensure the Massachusetts economy continues to be connected to the world. Four new gates will be added, including 3 gates originally approved in 1995 but never constructed.

Since 3 of them have been in the pipelines since 1995 -- but were first delayed by 9/11/2001 and then by the Grand Recession circa 2009 -- iot looks asd if the real net New Gates =1 with the 3 in the pipeline being delivered finally?

Not too surprising. The plans aren't all-or-nothing, so they can shelve what they need to and revisit in the future.

Wasn't phase 1 of the terminal E expansion supposed to be for 4 gates? Essentially, they're just saying we will delay the start of phase 2 that would have added 3 additional gates to a time to be determined down the road.

An ambitious Massport would accelerate the people-mover to the front while traffic/construction impact is light...

They still need to pay for it. Only a fool would buy bonds from an airport right now.

They haven't even figured out what mode it's supposed to run. Wasn't the last set of renders a "let's grab a couple sets of Blue Line cars and run them in circles" placeholder...which would be quite a bit less 'automated' and more resource-intensive by nature than most APM's? If it's not even fleshed out at a base conceptual level, design-starts alone are still years away let alone shovel-ready. And since no budget seems to have been assigned, there isn't much capability right now to even take that placeholder into further study to refine its base concepts to any less-fuzzy degree.

Personally, I don't think they're approaching this with enough imagination. If you've already got SL1 pinging the terminals, shouldn't grade-separating that...and baking in design compatibility of said busway for a future co-mingling rail mode TBD (like LRT roped in from Urban Ring NE quadrant)...be a thoroughly-vetted 'vision thing' concept before we start copypasta'ing whatever most recently came out of Gov. Cuomo's mouth about the LaGuardia AirTrain few down there seem to want? We've got the incumbent one-seat ride that won't be going away even if the Blue Line shuttle bus gets replaced by an APM. Scalability + efficiency should at least weight to a full work-up to modal compatibility with what's there (SL1) and what could very well be coming (UR-NE) before making their 'vision thing' pick and doing a work-up from there. Unless there's been more development since the last renders that hasn't gone into wide circulation I don't get the impression their APM concepts were even far enough along to survey the modal landscape and state any sort of reason-backed preference whatsoever. Like, as in it's literally just a map placeholder for deep-diving still TBD.

I no longer have access to the plans that show it, but if memory serves, several of the under construction projects were spec'ed to be built with support columns for future light weight APM as an integral part of their design; primarily B-C Connector as there it'd have to basically run on the roof, and now held Terminal E Garage, with C Roadways and canopy spec'ed to not preclude. So I think its coming, eventually, as air traffic will rebound sooner or later.

I also don't see the below full system render upthread, so I'm going to leave it here. I do really like the look of that cable stayed curve over I90 to A. That said, I would support a rethink to include SL expansion and dedicated RoW through the airport property; dare to hope for rail or rubber wheeled silver line connection one day under the harbor.
