MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

A very small detail, but I'm curious how they'll deal with one of my favorite oddities on the system: the Radford Lane entrance to Ashmont station, with its single faregate. I think it's the only single-faregate entrance on the entire system. (Was there an entrance from Radford Lane before the circa-2010 renovation?)

I saw this announced exactly nowhere and have yet to see them in Ruggles but I'll check next time I'm in.

I saw on Twitter that Laurel Paget-Seekins has left the MBTA. She was more or less "in charge" of AFC 2.0 as far as I can tell (she always presented the updates at the FMCB meetings). I wonder what that means for the project.

Just a hunch: more money shoveled at Cubic in the next contract amendment so they can take longer.

IIRC, Lechmere only has one faregate for each side of the station.

Lechmere had several on the inbound side, and of course none on the outbound side.

Yup, and it may win for closest fare gates to the yellow line. On days where you couldn't step right onto the train after going through the gate, it could get uncomfortable waiting for trains on that "platform" with the crowds and the negligible room to walk past anyone standing (or the likelihood that people will just stand directly in front of the gates).

+1. That loss won't be lamented. Onward!

That they aren't going to put the Charlie character on the new Charlie Cards makes me sad.

I'm not too sad about that - the front design of the current CharlieCards clearly saw its best days when first introduced.

"The official said the 15-year-old fare gates in subway stations were originally going to be replaced, but now will be refurbished instead."

Every time I hear about this project it's gotten worse...

So...are we shoving more money at Cubic for the privilege of somebody else temp refurbbing not-their faregates?

Scheidt+Bachman appears to be finding their way to continue to do work in MA (only).

What's wild is that the faregates are so wildy unreliable - refurbing feels like a penny-smart pound-foolish kinda action.

Nah I like the idea. A 15 year lifespan is idiotic. Afaik, Pittsburgh and NJT use the same gates.
