MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

Is the architectural identity of Kendall just going to be annoying, over-engineered cantilevers?

Sure.

The steel for the new headhouse is up. Looks like it got quite a MBTA-standardized washing rather than the flashy render they had originally put out with the bold overhang, but perhaps the canopy will come later....

There is a temporary head house with a full new elevator for the inbound station because they need to maintain access while the pretty one is built. It’s going to have a really neat roof.

I think the canopy is essentially independent of the steel/glass headhouse structure(s) we see being erected. The latest design on file with the city for the "PB303 SoMa Headhouse" is from 2019, see here:

In particular, here's the latest design review:

I think I'd like it more if the yellow went all the way up... it just kind of stops on the second floor.

Yeah, I think it would have been nice to have even more structural accenting. But I'll say that this is an improvement over the original design. It was going to be yet another floating glass box, whereas now the bold yellow trusswork will add some pop to the center of Kendall Sq.

I'm confused - why have such a big - or any - road there?

Presumably because it leads to the entry ramp to the Sloan School underground parking garage. At least the large surface parking lot that was between Sloan and Wadsworth is eliminated by this project.

Mods: can we move everything from post 1007 onwards into the new MIT SoMa Site 2 thread that Equilibria created? (you can feel free to delete my post 1007 which is redundant with the start of that thread)

That is a HUGE road for that purpose! Look how wide it is! My god, will it also have parking, a bikepath, and a dedicated central buslane??
