The New Retail Thread

El Jefe's owner John Schall had asked for a 3 a.m. closing time, like at his outlets down Comm. Ave. near Agganis Arena, on Huntington Avenue in the Fenway and in Harvard Square.

Board Chairwoman Kathleen Joyce today acknowledged that Schall has been "a good operator in the city," who has managed to keep two taco places open until 3 a.m. with no problems. But the board considers each location separately and "there is a lot of support for an earlier closing" in Kenmore Square. At a hearing yesterday, support for a 3 a.m. closing was balanced by opposition from, among others, Boston University's police chief, City Councilor Sharon Durkan and the owner of Cornwall's, who also leads a Kenmore residents group.

Lots of recent openings in Central. Seems like the retail and dining scene there is pretty strong!

This place just soft opened on Dot Ave x Savin Hill Ave where Venice Pizza used to be. Went recently and its a big improvement

A new Bakey location opening in Kendall in mid-Feb:

A new chocolate store (Tuck's Truffles) appears to have opened, or will open very soon, in Termeer Square in Kendall:

Does anyone know what's going into the former West Roxbury Walgreens, if anything? It looks like they're gutting the place

Michelin Guide is coming to Boston, offering tourism spotlight for local restaurants

Thats going to be interesting to watch, but if it's being sponsored by Meet Boston I'm really rather curious about its limits - I'm not actually sure there's enough in Metro Boston to fill a Michelin Guide. Is it going to be limited to that region? Notably, the Greater Boston Regional Tourism Council (dba Meet Boston) extends to Wrentham but doesn't include Lexington. What about places in Salem or further out in the Burbs?

In particular, I'm thinking the Bon Ami popup in Concord, Nightshade in Salem, Herb Lyceum in Groton, and the Former Tasting counter folks look like they may be setting up in Western Mass. New York City's notably reaches up into Westchester county but doesn't even think about New Jersey, while places like Florida, Texas, Colorado and California have statewide guides... At a minimum, I think this needs to be MA statewide, but personally, I think I'd rather see this ultimately become "New England" generally. That would probably need all the state councils on tourism to sign on - Greater Boston is appropriate as a nucelus, but it'd be a shame to leave places in RI, NH, VT and Maine out, where Gracie's, Stages, Hen of the Woods & Twelve come to mind as prototypical Michelin contenders.
