Re: The Merano No thank you. I hope this doesn't get built but it seems to be that this is the result of backroom negotiation and is already a "done deal".

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

I thought I saw a breakdown that says the free day will cost $1.5M and the discounted passed around $3.5 for $5M total.

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

I would think small modest increases would be a lot easier to handle for a low-income budget than massive sweeping changes every few years. The massive fare changes also consume a substantial amount of time and energy.

Copley Place Expansion and Tower | Back Bay

The money that the mysterious "Foreign Investor" pays to purchase the housing doesn't disappear into the ether. It goes to pay the salaries of everyone involved with building the development and the investor to get a return on their investment and fund more housing units. This is undoubtedly...

Late night T service take 2

Even if the T doesn't have an estimate, they should be able to pick up anecdotally on which end stations are worth the trip. They can also try to infer late night origin stations by comparing 2014 vs 2013 data. Regardless of the data issue - I think the overall theme of your post was on point...

Late night T service take 2

It's also tough to get into a commuting pattern that relies on taking a late night train when you don't know if it will be there in a year or not. I didn't see initially that they cut a few of the bus routes and cut back headways, I think this helps a lot. $10M is a lot but I think it's key for...

Late night T service take 2

If this is the only cut they are making its unsustainable. Cut more service now and get this thing to a sustainable base that can't be built from.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

I agree with Matthew that the gains from driverless cars alone are limited. Any gains from increased capacity due to tighter spacing, speeds, etc. would be offset by people changing their behavior and increasing usage. Essentially the same thing that happens now when the DOT adds a lane or pours...

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

This approach makes a lot of sense to me. Of course, the T spits in the face of logic by building garages in denser areas. With commuter rail it's not about pricing parking to match supply, but more about increasing supply to match demand. It also doesn't help that the T appears to have decent...

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

The commuter rail stagnation in Boston is certainly an anomaly. The Big Dig could help explain why Boston is diverging from National and Local trends. By most accounts, it's a lot easier to get into and out of the city now. This impacts long distance Commuters more than local riders.

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

I don't think we will see $4 fares anytime soon. I think Subway fares could reasonably rise to $2.25-$2.50 within the next few years, $2 for bus and $85-$90 for a LinkPass. I'd be fine wIth getting them to a sustainable level and then tying increases to a CPI index. I think they will try to...

    General Infrastructure

Zone based fares make sense on the Metro because it's coverage area mimics commuter rail. I'm not sure how much sense they make on the T. I could see a discount incentive for people that don't go into the heaviest areas, (Commuting from say Alewife to Harvard) but I don't think we should start...
