I'd be willing to bet a lot of the people on this site, most of whom are very pro-development, are democrats as well. Let's leave politics out of this.

95% of the people who post here are Democrats(or further to the left) so that's probably not a great angle to play.

How about Byron Rush - A(for asshole, among other things)
 
So leave politics out of this but keep the personal attacks in (seen a lot of those on here) Good to know. Also since politics plays a major role on what gets built around here it kinda should be part of the conversation.
 
Against my better judgement... make whatever partisan snipes you want, but NIMBYs come in all political flavors. Boston is highly Democratic in its population therefore most NIMBYs in Boston are likely to be Democrats. But so what? Most [fill in whatever demo you want] in Boston are likely to be Democrats.

NIMBYs change their tactics as the process moves forward (often adding increasingly cumbersome social justice demands), but ultimately NIMBYism is an inherently (small-c) conservative exercise. Residents like the way things are and don't want their neighborhood to change. It's traditionalist; provincial; conservative. That's the root of most NIMBY attitudes. Many political liberals fall into literal conservative provincialism when change is in the works. Hypocritical? Absolutely. But fairly cheap political points as far as it goes.

Well said. Suburban NIMBYs that prevent multifamily housing from being built and mandate minimum lot sizes tend to be free-market Republicans. NIMBYism is a cancer that runs counter to the (supposed) principles of both major American political parties.

I'm not for the personal attacks either. I don't understand how people even get into arguments on this website for the most part.

What location is or is not appropriate for a new stadium, casino, etc?

Blanket statements meant to offend, like "95% of NIMBY's are Democrats" or "Everybody who rides a bicycle is an idiot and deserves to be run over by a truck."

People with particular ties to a neighborhood suddenly becoming selective NIMBY's (ex. 45 Worthington Street thread).

People who believe their own set of values reflects the values of everybody on this forum. (as in, I speak for all Archbostoner's when I say.....)

Contrarians trying to rain on most of our parades. (MT's cladding should be more like 33 Arch and I'm disappointed based on a poorly angled picture showing these 3 floors of dirty glass reflecting a parking garage)

Grass is greener people. "Why can't we be booming more like Miami or Toronto?" Answer: Because Miami and Toronto have no standards of design or quality and are both looking awful these days. (except, obviously, not everybody agrees)

Actual NIMBY's. (cough, Ned Flaherty, never forget)

I put a caricature of myself in there, as I pretty much started a 10 page armageddon on the bicycles thread. Also love to argue about Miami and Toronto. I am self-aware that I do this, although more particularly after, outside the heat of the moment. I'm also quite the keen observer. ;)

I believe karma is reserved for situations like these. Whatever community groups are blocking this out of their own self interest will get it back 10 fold in the future.
 
Just build the thing already, theres like 400 developments going up around the city and this is the one they choose to keep stalling........how about stall the kensington next time.
 
I think his point is that conservatives are generally in favor of change and new things, whereas progressives prefer that everything stay the same.

Ok this is basically just political name calling, but to say that conservatives are in favor of change and progressives want everything the same demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of both history and the etymology of the words.
