I am really shocked to say this, but I actually like how this has turned out so far, but what is with the micro balconies? Are they for real?

I really dislike this building. I really don't like the color, or its size/shape. The random bands of horizontal glass are cool, but they aren't enough to make me like it. I also don't get the random bit of the building that is all glass. This building, along with many other new buildings, uses the postmodern technique where different parts of the facade exhibit different styles, such that you could imagine the entire building looking different if you pictured it all with one of those facade styles. I know I'm not doing a good job describing this (I don't have any sort of architecture background), but I know this kind of technique was popular with Michael Graves and Phillip Johnson.

Anyone else catch this in the Herald?

Pier 4 owner cashes out

Pier 4 master developer New England Development has cashed out of the 1-million-square-foot South Boston waterfront project, selling 130 and 140 Northern Ave. to the deeper-pocketed Tishman Speyer, the New York owner of properties including Rockefeller Center, Chrysler Center and Yankee Stadium.

The Newton company sold the two Seaport District parcels, which had been slated for an office building, a separate condominium building and waterfront public park, for $70 million, according to Registry of Deeds documents filed yesterday.

New England Development executives could not be reached for comment. Tishman Speyer, which also owns 125 High St. and One Federal St. in Boston, declined comment, but is expected to move faster with the development of the two parcels.

whatever happened to the hotel component? Is the land too valuable for a hotel? At this point, I'd rather see a nice hotel down there than more offices.

Re: Pier 4 Residential Tower | 136-146 Northern Avenue | Seaport

Agree. I thought a hotel was always part of the phased plan. I guess market forces should dictate this, but a nice hotel or even residential would be preferable.

Re: Pier 4 Residential Tower | 136-146 Northern Avenue | Seaport

I think the hotel might have been switched to additional residential a little while back, but don't quote me on it.

I also thought that the Pier 4 development was supposed to be 3 buildings, stepping down in height toward the water.

It is still supposed to be 3 buildings. According to the article, 130 and 140 Northern Ave. were sold. These are the two undeveloped lots, and do not include the building currently under construction.

Re: Pier 4 Residential Tower | 136-146 Northern Avenue | Seaport

^ It sounds like those two parcels got sold and will now be developed faster.
