Re: New Building Proposed for Newbury Street
So, we'll have to wait til someone else comes forward with a plan to build. All things considered, looking back, the whole public process took very little time - six months from proposal to approval. The developer had apparently gotten what he needed while the Back Bay residents got a shorter building.
Question, though. The photos of that side of Newbury show three brownstones circa 1945 and an empty lot circa 1962. The Herald article says the parking garage was built in the 1980's.
But, to the left of that, at what be 2 Newbury Street - what about that? Currently, it's the location of a mult-floor Burberrys and I assume some office space. The public record shows this to be an office building. There's no record of a building at the location using an Arlington Street address so it must be 2 Newbury St (entrance is on this side, not Arlington).
My confusion is, if you look at this old photo, it looks as though there's a hat shop at 2 Newbury. If so, what about the Burberrys' building - when was this built? It looks (from the Google image) that the Burberrys building is old - but I guess it's "faux" old?
I'll check the Bunting History of the Back Bay book when I get home but if anyone has an idea, please post.
