Allston-Brighton Infill and Small Developments

89 Brighton Ave flat out denied by the Zoning Board on Tuesday. I think this denial opens a lot of questions about the city's approval process, especially as the reasons for denial were not really clear to me.

That is really disappointing. It was last week or so where they turned down a building in West Roxbury because it used prefab construction--helps when one of the board members is the head of the carpenters union.

How does one get on the board? I see a vacant seat.

what's going on with do rei me site? Cleared and excavated, but no work or equipment on site when I drove by yesterday. Looked to be the same with peniman st. project too.

Penniman had its construction fence replaced with Jersey barriers yesterday. This morning, I saw a construction guy opening up the site at 7 AM. So, maybe that one's started up again.

^ would love to see work start on The Aberdeen. It has been painful seeing all that Comm. Ave. frontage sitting there as a wasteland collecting garbage for the past couple of yrs.

It was my guess that the developer was trying to flip it after obtaining permitting - which is exactly what appears to have happened. Hopefully the plans can proceed now.

What's up with the labor union concerns? That seems way out of line for a zoning board of appeals.

Because board member Mark Ehrlich is also a leader of the carpenters Union. I shit you not.

There should be hell to pay over this. If something passes the BRA, it should not be "considered" again. Multiple veto points are a huge reason why housing supply is limited in attractive areas in this country.

At the NW corner of Western Ave and Telford St. a 3 story building has been demolished and the site is being cleared all the way north to Soldiersfield Rd. Could this be another phase of the Charlesriver View project?

Yep, it is the homeownership component of CharlesView.

The issue is the BRA has to approve every project as a special permit. "Planning" should mean the zoning is in place for by-right development without the need for special permits in the first place.

Couldn't agree with you more.

Given the current terrible system, though, a first reform could be to ensure that there's only one level of approval necessary.
