Assembly Square Infill and Small Developments | Somerville

Montaje is the name for the new apartment building. As previously announced Alloy is the name for the new condo building. Leasing for Montaje will begin spring 2016.

"We are currently designing a 250,000 sq. ft. office building to prepare for a tenant. There is no tenant now, but we’re pushing the design and making efforts so if we find a tenant, we can advance quickly to construction"

What a lonely island.
But happy, like Bermuda.

You might think that "getting across" 28/93 is a big deal, but plenty of neighborhoods thrive similarly small and similarly isolated if they're dense and attractive enough.

Given the choice between, say, decking over 28, or taking the same $300m and catalyzing a new Assembly at River's Edge or Lynn Works or Union Sq or Wonderland, I'd much rather have more Assemblies (made less lonely by rail transit) than to perfectly knit Assembly back into Somerville.

I was just here last weekend. It's pretty cool, but I also think people are kind of overrating it based on its current incarnation.

Many posters here use this as an example to rail against the Seaport. However, Assembly Square is still anchored by a strip mall, which is something we will hopefully never see on the Seaport. Also, Seaport land is more valuable, so it makes sense to see more of the large blocks over there, whereas Assembly can get away with 5 story wood structures to increase density.

Once the current set of Seaport buildings are done, I would take that over Assembly in a heartbeat. It doesn't have the luxury of being beside a shopping center, but is overall denser with more futuristic architecture. I do like Assembly quite a bit, but all the hoopla is really centered around one intersection. It has some good draws, like the Lego Museum and movie theater, but it had most of those things to begin with. (not to mention Good Time Emporium, the single best/affordable place for casual recreation around here, may it RIP)

I have been to the Seaport in the last few weeks as well, and at this point the cumulative amount of buildup over the last few years puts it ahead of Assembly for me. I'd rather walk around there any day.

Comparisons between this and the Seaport are crazy. It took the Seaport more than 20 years to get where it is now, and was helped out a bit by, oh, I don't know, a couple billion dollars in infrastructure improvements. Never mind that it literally right next downtown.

This place is doing just fine, and in 10 years will be an interesting place. And like I have posted before, those strip malls will not be there in 30 years. Assembly IS like its own little island, but once finished, it will be an interesting one, with its own sense of place. Just got to give it a little to time to grow into itself.

What he said...I actually think assembly is more fun to walk around. At least you can actually shop there.

This is what some critics don't seem to get. Of course it doesn't feel like a complete neighborhood. It's not. It's a neighborhood under construction. It's about 1/3rd complete.

Yet to be completed/constructed are: parcel 5a, parcel 6, parcel 5B, parcen 7A, parcel 7B, parcel 8, partners building retail, the two small buildings between parcel 7A and 7B which will be a great gathering spot.

Then you have 5 Middlesex Avenue, which may put another 4 blocks of buildings at Assembly.

Then after that you have the possibility of the Assembly mall being torn down or partly torn down (that K-mart could be ax'd off and the rest of the mall maintained), and the other potential targets for eminent domain.

There will be construction in Assembly for the next 15 years. Let's not count our chickens before they hatch.

^^^^^^^

From that vantage point, where would the Wynn Casino be located? I see a few cranes off to the left but not sure if that's casino construction.

It would be behind the partners building, a little left of the windmill (aka'in between a Costco and the power plant')
