Biking in Boston

It looks like a new Hubway station just went in at Binney and 6th St on the edge of Kendall Square and East Cambridge

Yeah noticed that this weekend. Good move considering the dearth of bikes in Kendall during busy times. Also, 300 employees are moving into the Biogen building, so perhaps that got Hubway on board with another station there.

I'm not sure how official these locations are, but coUrbanize has been updated to show proposed locations for the Hubway expansion in JP/Roxbury/Dot, South Boston, and Charlestown. In some cases there is a fixed location, but in others they have provided 2-3 options and are looking for feedback. Either way, it provides a view into what the expansion will look like.

Seems like the breakdown is as follows:

Charlestown: 1
South Boston: 3
Dorchester: 2
Roxbury: 0
Jamaica Plain: 7

I thought they weren't going to come to Forest Hills - this is great! I'd like to see one in rozzie square, but the bike infrastructure really needs to be drastically improved between ukraine and the start of the SW corridor (which won't be done until 2015/2016). plus washington street is in really rough shape south of archdale...

another note - i was riding on mass ave this morning along christian science center - that bike lane is just awful - it's safer to ride with traffic through there.

It's very uneven/broken/bumpy, much like the northbound lane on the Mass Ave. bridge near MIT.

What's wrong with the bike lane?

extremely rough pavement conditions - bad enough that if someone isn't careful could cause them to lose control of their bike - the pavement's a little better a few feet to the left of the bike lane.

This is one of the more frustrating things about the bike infrastructure roll-out. they stripe these lanes and put in sharrows, but the road conditions are sometimes really poor where they "encourage" cyclists to go. things like raised manhole covers and drainage grates are hazardous, especially when it's dark or in inclement weather. bike lanes on the shoulder often get filled with debris, and in the case of mass ave near christian science center, chunks of asphalt.

that section I mentioned near forest hills is sharrows on top of really bad patch-jobs (even the sidwalk through there is treacherous)- I ride way out in the left of the lane, which really upsets motorists, but I'd rather be alive and people pissed off at me instead of someone trying to pass too close while I'm trying to avoid potholes.

This was a lot of fun. I doubt that I'll ever be able to ride on the Zakim Bridge ramp again.

It was fun! When the ride started down the Southwest Corridor Park I decided to just keep going home to Rozzie. It was just too easy for me to bail out.

Why I didn't stand on the other side of the bridge during the BMX freestyle show and get the Zakim in the background I can only chalk up to the late hour.

They let us ride all the way up the ramp to the point where it merges with I-93. (A police car blocked it off there.) The ride organizers did not expect this.

Boston's new goal for bike mode share: 30-50% by 2043

Freedman makes a comparison to Copenhagen - but Copenhagen's "low point" was about 10% mode share (more like Cambridge). Boston is currently somewhere between 2 and 3%.

Anyway - I see the big issue as updating infrastructure controlled by Mass DOT and DCR. From what I understand, getting them to design for multi-modal transportation (as opposed to car-centric transportation) has been very challenging.

Just got this:

THE CITY OF BOSTON WOULD LIKE TO INFORM YOU THAT IT WILL BE INSTALLING BIKE PAVEMENT MARKINGS ON COMMONWEALTH AVENUE FROM THE NEWTON TOWN LINE TO KELTON STREET

(Update) Bike helmet vending machines set to open at Hubway stations delayed
By Morgan Rousseau

The launch of HelmetHub helmet vending machines at Hubway bike stations has once again been delayed, according to officials.

The helmet rental system was originally set to debut on Aug. 26. The rescheduled date, set for tomorrow at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square, was pushed back to to a “technical glitch.”

The new launch date has yet to be determined...

Hubway required to take down bike stand at Charles Street station due to Longfellow construction, according to this article from the Boston Courant.

Love this comment from a Hill resident.

Ughhh. Speaking as a Beacon Hill resident, fuck that guy, Hubway (and that particular station) has really improved mobility for short hops around the area. Totally missed out on that meeting, was it run by Hubway? I didn't hear a thing about it before hand.

In related news, cycing around Beacon Hill, the Public Garden, and the Common could get a whole lot easier, the City will be holding a meeting to discuss downtown cycletracks on September 18th.

How much crack does that resident have to be smoking... Charles Street is disgustingly wide, 5 lanes, with tiny sidewalks. Such a "famed" street.

Young people really need to get involved in these long-standing neighborhood groups. For better or worse, their views have a lot of weight with the City. These often claim to represent "the neighborhood", but often it's views of a very select part of the population that in general does not welcome change with open arms. The only way these groups will better reflect what the population as a whole actually thinks is if young people start participating and volunteering as well.

Agree 100%. Ideal situation would be a two-way cycle track and widened sidewalks. The biggest threat to pedestrians along Charles Street is how narrow the current sidewalks are.
