Just FYI, I used to work at the Castle under a boss who explained to me why they are removing the vines and they won't be returning. The building have reach a point that leaving the vines on means seriously weakening its structural integrity. So they won't be putting it back. I won't be surprise the trees with its roots have the same issue looking at that picture.

It looks like they've opted away from a glassy facade; in it's place a more appropriate, Sert-inspired brutalist design. The winter garden should be a nice touch.

Somebody tell the traffic "engineers:"
The long-term traffic volume trend along Commonwealth Avenue and adjacent streets
has been downward since 1987. Daily volumes west of the BU Bridge are approximately
17 to 18 percent lower in 2012 than in 1987. East of the BU Bridge, 2012 daily traffic
volumes are lower than 2001 volumes by 18 to 32 percent, depending upon the location.
On Bay State Road, daily volumes are down nearly 23 percent during this same time
period. Peak-hour traffic is also down throughout the campus: since the 2003 Master
Plan (2002 data), peakhour traffic has decreased between 9 percent and 25 percent.

While I can tell you're trying display your disdain for traffic engineers and policy to design matching traffic usage, I have to ask in irritation in your point?

Because the places you point out, specially the BU Bridge have already taken action to take advantage of the decline of road usage by cars. The bridge itself have been reduced from 4 lanes to 3 lanes with a bikes lanes on both sides. They have redesigned and implemented steps. Since I presume your greater goal is to see better distribution between modes, I don't see what you are trying to get at exactly since the the engineers did take action to provide better distribution on the areas they are allowed to touch. What is missing, congestion-pricing tolls for the "benefit" of the drivers?
 
I think Matthew's point is that much to the shock of some traffic engineers, traffic volumes can be reduced without grinding the city to a halt. At least, that's what my point would be.

Well from the implementation the engineers done to Comm ave and the BU Bridge with removing lanes and so on, I don't see signs they practice that logic for this particular case.
