Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

Is it me or has the Hotel in Porter Sq. next to Christopher's been moving along at a glacial pace?

Glacial would be a generous word to use with regard to that development.

These small developments are likely pressured by the labor market. Hard to get folks on-site.

I really hate that building. The random color panels is just a total fail IMO.

This side absolutely should have had red/brown panels mixed in to reference the brick context of the area. Would have been 100x better.

I still love this building.

I bet they had some intern go over the elevations to make sure there wasn't accidentally a swastika in there.

Akamai says they plan to stay in Kendall.

Boston Globe said:
Akamai Technologies, one of the biggest companies in Cambridge, has decided to consolidate its six offices into a single campus-like facility in Kendall Square. The decision means one of the largest potential prizes for landlords in Boston hoping to fill their new office towers with a premier corporate name is no longer available.

[...]

Akamai’s in the market for a new building – or buildings – in Kendall, looking for 500,000 square feet, and maybe more. She said Akamai hasn’t settled on an exact location, but hopes to have a deal in place by the end of the year.

It should have no shortage of choices. There are several big projects in the pipeline at that size in the booming business district, as well as space that could open up if other tenants move. The company is considering both new construction and existing office space, Chapman said.

“We’re having preliminary conversations with several developers and landlords,” she said. “It’s very easy. They just reach out to me.”

Most of Akamai’s current leases expire in 2019, meaning any move is likely three years away.

Are there really "no shortage of choices" for half a million sf in Kendall three years from now? If only Volpe were further along...

I had Akamai in mind for a possible anchor tenant at Hub on Causeway or Government Center Garage. Oh well.

Also, at current rates, this space should cost them about $35 million per year.

I've been noticing this spooling up for the last week walking by, and apparently ABP closes tomorrow.
