Dorchester Infill and Small Developments

Just to make things more confusing, the BRA map of Boston claims that Franklin Park is entirely in Roxbury and the 1/2 mile of land east of Blue Hill Ave is not in Dorchester.

^thats what I've have always thought it was! Whats the zip code for the zoo that should settle this!

Zoo New England
One Franklin Park Road
Boston, MA 02121

Per USPS.com:
Actual City name in 02121
BOSTON, MA
Acceptable City names in 02121
DORCHESTER, MA
GROVE HALL, MA

ZIP codes aren't always right, though, and they definitely aren't constructed with neighborhood boundaries in mind. There was a section of 02131 (ie Roslindale) that most residents considered to be West Roxbury. They made enough noise about it, that it is now 02132. Whether or not it's West Roxbury or Roslindale, though, is still an open question.

A common misconcepton is that zip codes define areas that can be mapped. They don't. Or perhaps they can be mapped, but the map would look like pre-Napoleonic Germany, with all manner of enclaves, exclaves, and strange exceptions.

Thanks for those who answered my question about BK/Queens, so Blue Hill Ave is Rx, I clearly don't know much about that part of town b/c I thought that was Dot also.

My personal recollection is that Blue Hill Ave starts in Milton at Canton Ave and runs thru Mattapan Square to Morton Street, it is then generally considered Dorchester until Grove Hall where it becomes Roxbury.

So is the definition more geographic or demographic?

Demographic, no. Geographically, Milton is south, then Mattapan, Dorchester is in the middle, and Roxbury is the most northern. Grove Hall is the most recent official boundary between Roxbury and Dorchester, and is widely considered so to this day. Mattapan is/was a village of Dorchester so there is no official boundary. Milton and Boston is obviously a municipal boundary though interestingly, Milton was also once part of Dorchester.
