Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Odd that Wynn would need this since other New England casinos seem to abide by the 2AM cutoff for booze. However, its a sign of things to come. If he's getting concessions from the state already before the place even opens, how long do you figure before he comes back to lower his tax rate?

If I'm a shareholder in his company, I say go Wynn. This is smart business. If you're expecting a tax windfall as a resident....

Its going to be real easy for him to get his way with the legislature. A few free comps and jobs for the unemployable relatives of people like DeLeo and he most likely gets his contributions to the state reduced.

No way. Expanded drinking hours is one thing, reduced state contribution rate is a whole 'nother. That would be met with SO much public outcry.

^ Let them have it if they agree to require the driver of every car leaving the garage to blow into a breathalyzer.

What about something a bit less Draconian? I know it would be difficult to enforce but how about drinks served from 2:00am-4:00am for resort guests only? Perhaps you show your room card for service during those two hours.

Seems pretty easy to enforce to a reasonable degree at the server level.

Server: "Yes, I would be happy to get that for you. Between 2 and 4 drinks are free and available to Wynn hotel guests while playing. Do you have your room card?" ... "Thank you." Pretty simple script.

They could even reasonably extend the privilege to guests of other associated hotels with shuttle service or within walking distance in the area if they wanted. Makes sense from both a public safety and marketing perspective.

What does Wynn care? He's here to make money. How did he get the expanded booze considered? With some robust public hearing? Or tucked away in a spending bill in the middle of the night? If you guessed the 2nd option you win a prize.

Wynn is going to do what every other casino operator does, which is claim profits are down and he needs this to survive and all those jobs might go away. Same thing happened with Twin Rivers down in Rhode Island. These guys are masters at framing the public dialogue. By the time he's finished with his PR campaign the public is going to be demanding that the legislature reduce the poor guy's tax burden. :D

Huh? Wynn can't pass new rules unilaterally. He's free to make as many requests as he wants to further his interests; that's his job. But his requests amount to absolutely nothing without the approval of public authorities. And they are ultimately held accountable by the public.

Do you honestly believe that the general public (and the press and public officials at large) would support reducing his required contribution rate? Really?

You have a lot more optimistic view of state government and the people populating it than I do. That's cool. Where I think you're off the reservation a little is the notion that the press (are you kidding?) and public officials are going to put public concern over lining their own pockets. For example public officials rammed through a pay raise that the general public was firmly against. Yet, it somehow became law anyway...

I think its a near certainty that Wynn will come back in a few years looking for a tax reduction. I think its something we all need to be vigilant about because casinos follow a well trodden path of promising a lot to get approved and then asking for 1) special rules, 2) expansion, and 3) tax breaks once established. He didn't get as rich as he is (nor Aldersen or any others) by not being aggressive in his business dealings with public officials who are far more easily persuaded than you'd think and who tend to be over their heads in dealing with casino execs.

Monsanto and Others Left Everett, Massachusetts Doused in Toxins

Monsanto Chemical Company

In 1929, Monsanto purchased an island stretching approximately thirty acres located on the Mystic River in Everett, Massachusetts (Johnston, 2010). These thirty acres were formerly a small portion of Merrimac Chemical Company‟s empire. Monsanto Chemical Company was, at this time, the largest chemical manufacturer in the nation. This land in Everett was one of Monsanto‟s largest chemical plants in the U.S., early in the company‟s history. While in the hands of Monsanto, the island was used to produce plasticizer, sulfuric acid, and polyvinyl butyral, as well as to store acids, aluminum, and dyes (O‟Reilly et al. 1995; Johnston 2010). Monsanto also produced pentachlorophenol (PCP). Genealogist Jim Denning reports that the safe levels of PCP levels in the air were approximately 0.000072 parts per billion (ppb) prior to 1940. In Everett, Monsanto’s level of PCP exceeded 2.0 ppb.

Additional Contaminant Sources

At various times, Cochrane, Merrimac, and Monsanto Chemical companies owned the land comprising the East and West Side parcels. Nevertheless, these parties were not the only ones responsible for the atrocious
condition along the Mystic River. The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) also had, and continues to have today, though in a lesser degree, a presence in close proximity to the East and West Side parcels. The original Everett Station was near the Mystic River. Everett Station was the beginning of the orange line, prior to the construction of Oak Grove, Malden, and Wellington stations. In addition, an MBTA bus garage and maintenance facility is also located off of Alford Street/Route 99. It has been reported and is certainly true that MBTA property (soil, groundwater, air)was contaminated as a result of the pollution brought on by the area chemical companies. However, while the chemical companies are responsible for the majority of the contamination on the East and West Side parcels and much of the Mystic River, the MBTA holds responsibility as well. During our visit to the East Side parcel, we learned from Officer Patrick Johnson that the MBTA would discard unwanted,
broken down subway motorcars and buses by dumping them into the Mystic River when the tide was low. The parts would be set ablaze and left to wash away and disintegrate over time.

Everett, Massachusetts

Everett is a city in Middlesex County, just north of Boston. Incorporated in 1870 as a town, and again in 1892 as a city, Everett has a landmass of slightly less than 3.5 square miles and a population of just over 38,000 people. Everett is governed by a mayor and a city council consisting of a Board of Alderman and a Common Council, making it the only city in the country with a bicameral legislature.

Early 19th-century Everett was primarily an agricultural community. Farms and fruit orchards provided produce for local use and sale in Boston and neighboring communities. Timber, brick, and rope for construction were all made locally. By 1870, the Eastern and Grand Junction Railroad served as a vital link for commerce and transportation. Though small, Everett’s substantial water access along the Island End and Mystic Rivers proved attractive to heavy industry. Chemical plants, oil refineries and power plants occupied much of the city’s riverfront areas. Companies such New England Coke Works, Colonial Beacon Oil Company, and the James A. Cochrane Chemical Company established a foundation for later companies such as Humble Oil and Refining Company and Monsanto Chemical Company. Ancillary companies such as the Dampney Company, founded in 1917 to produce specialty anti-corrosion coatings for boilers and turbines, also sprang up. The early decades of the 20th century saw some stagnation of industry, due to labor disputes and economic depression. However, the approach of World War II saw a return to productivity. In 1939, General Electric established a plant in Everett, and by 1943 was operating on a 24-hour basis in aid of the war effort. The H.K. Porter Company opened its plant in 1942. In 1943, the first unit of Boston Edison Company’s Mystic Station power generation plant came online. Much of the economic growth of this period lasted well into the second half of the 20th century.

Asbestos exposure has been a problem in Everett over the years, due to the city’s high population-density and tradition of heavy industry. If you or a loved one have been exposed to asbestos, you may be at risk for asbestos lung cancer or other illnesses. Mesothelioma clinics in and around Everett are listed at the bottom of this page.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Tacky detailing on the service side. Not surprising.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

You ain't seen nothing yet. The entire ground floor, inside and out, will be a Liberace nightmare.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

True. At least we aren't getting a boat in a moat.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

I can't make heads or tails as to where the hotel / casino will go! Right now, it looks like a jungle of steel.

Does anyone have a diagram map that corresponds to what is being built?

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

It would seem around that concrete core.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Where on earth is the core? Don't see that either.

In the second photo you can see two tower cores being built. They are just to the left of the steel structure. They are currently covered by forms which will rise as the cores are constructed. I hope this helps (?)

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

So it would appear that this project might be more confusing & mind boggling than the construction of the new World Trade Center in New York City.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

The Globe has an update on construction today.

Boston Globe said:
The resort is scheduled to open at 8 p.m. on June 24, 2019, Wynn officials said

[...]

Despite losing some time to bad weather this spring, the project is on schedule, said Peter Campot, director of construction. About 660 people are working to build the resort — about 750 including management, Campot said. Those numbers will grow.

On Monday, workers were pouring concrete for the top floor of the four-level underground parking garage, designed to hold some 3,000 cars. In other parts of the site, cranes lowered steel beams to workers who guided them into place. Another group worked on the permanent bulkhead on the riverbank.

[...]

Elevator shafts are rising from the foundation, and it’s possible to make out the curved shape of what will be a 29-story hotel tower of bronze glass. The tower will be 370 feet, 3 inches tall, according to Wynn Resorts.

Crews are now building complicated portions of the lower floors, but in four to six weeks, work on the tower should accelerate to add one new floor about every week, according to Wynn Resorts. By year’s end, the tower should reach its full height, with about half covered with glass.

The article includes pictures too.
