Multiple press releases have been saying the tower will be 740'. Others say,
over 740'.... could still be 756'.

Or, maybe the 16' difference is the height of the antenna's base.

The FAA says 756 they haven't been wrong about any of the other buildings so that is the height to the highest architectural feature. There is a 100 foot antenna planned to rise above that.

(edit: full disclosure posted that when i was annoyed about unrelated stuff and probably shouldn't have, removed unnecessary comments)

I wonder how that antenna is going to look. I forgot about that. Someone had rendered an antenna before and it was kind of ugly. Hopefully its barely noticeable like the Hancock antennas.

i don't think any reports have said that it's to be an FM master antenna like that atop the prudential over over in needham, so it'll probably be relatively unobtrustive -- unless they opt to make it an architectural feature (which i'd be fine with, so long as it looked good).

If it was an architectural feature I would imagine it would have been rendered. You wouldn't need a 100 foot lightning rod, so my guess is it will be used for radio transmissions. It makes sense because its not every day in Boston that you get a new 756' tower to broadcast from. Many towers in Boston have some type of antenna attached to them if you look closely at the roofs. The most noticeable ones that aren't obvious like 1 beacon or the pru would be the hancock, financial center, the fed has a few that unless you really look for them you would never know they exist, one boston place has them slapped to the side of the box, excange place, 100 fed has a few, and more. Petty much anything tall in Boston has them besides International place and 111 huntington for obvious reasons from what Ive seen.

Hey, is 30 Dalton open yet? If it is we could find someone on this site to take pictures of construction for us.

The crazy thing about this tower is that noone knows its under construction. I dont know a single person thats not on this forum that knows about this. Even my dad who is currently working on the pierce and works on most major towers that go up had no idea. People and nimbys alike are about to sh*t their pants when this thing comes into view...and then keeps growing and growing and growing. Should be a good time when the back bay skyline as we know it changes forever.

Stick, you are so right. Nobody seems to know. I drove by there a few weeks ago when up in Boston and almost missed it. These types of tall, slim, small footprint towers are very common in NYC. People are going to go nuts when they realize that it will be taller than the Pru.

hopefully all the fanfare surrounding this tower's rise will induce some jealousy over at simon, resulting in a de-shelving of copley tower

Stick -- if there is an antenna the ultimate authority is the FCC -- they have to approve the specific license for the antenna:
details of construction
use
height above the sidewalk
height above the roof
height above MSL

However -- there will not be an application filed until the antenna is ready to be installed -- so we have to wait

Here's the info on the Pru

I just hope the crown is lit even though there has been no news, rumors, renders, or anything else saying it will be.

i wouldn't be surprised if, like MT, the concern about complaints from those paying for the absolute most expensive penthouse units makes a lighted crown prohibitive.

although if (again like MT) the roof is surrounded by a non-roofed mechanical screen/penthouse then you could have the interior of that topmost space lit, with the lighting facing up and not out. wish MT would do that.

although maybe the concern would be with distracting airplanes/pilots(?). i feel like a solution could be arrived at that wouldn't upset the ultra-rich penthouse-dwellers OR the FAA.

whenever i visit other cities -- including those considerably smaller and less important than boston -- i'm shocked and disappointed by how "dark" our skyline is. i know i've read others say they like the dark (and therefore serious/mysterious/distinctive) boston skyline, but it really just seems very out-of-date to me.
