Genzyme Plant Expansion | Allston

justin once praised Hauser Hall as a good example of PoMo because it "intelligently recycled the past."
Rightly so. That is a minor architectural masterpiece by designers who are in control of proportion and understand history, so they can make meaningful points about the building's place in time.

This Genzyme monstrosity's perpetrators are simply professionally incompetent. They are rank amateurs in massing, proportion and detailing, and their raids on history can be described as the plunder of Visigoths. They come away brandishing arches and grunting like cavemen. They have absolutely nothing intelligible to say.

There is a completely lack of culture in their barbaric product.

Compare that with the suave and erudite understanding of history that underlies every building by Wright, no matter how iconoclastic. You yourself pointed it out in your comments about the Marin County building.

Do you think it call too much attention to itself?
When you look like this building you should wear a paper bag on your head or hide in the corner.

This building ruins vistas from miles away. It farts and burps its way into the panorama of Boston's skyline from the river, laying waste to a delicate and refined view with its loutish, arrogant, overbearing swagger.

Truly a peasant of a building, this one is not even good enough for Des Moines or Fargo.

The dictionary says it best:

grotesque, adj.

1. odd or unnatural in shape, appearance, or character; fantastically ugly or absurd; bizarre.

2. fantastic in the shaping and combination of forms

This Genzyme monstrosity's perpetrators are simply professionally incompetent.

Who's responsible?

When you look like this building you should wear a paper bag on your head or hide in the corner.

Priceless.

But isn't there worse in Greater Boston? There must be some pile more worthy of your scorn and vitriol.

How about my office?

The "let's make this as attractive to muggers as possible so they'll close it forever" pedestrian bridge is my favorite part of your building. :)

Though abominable, your building falls well short in pretentiousness. It's not sufficiently "odd or unnatural in shape" to win this contest. It's wrong urbanistically and boring to behold, but it's not especially grotesque.

That building is something along the lines of a Bizarro World Trevi Fountain in the sense that it only takes a quick glance to recognize it, but for all the wrong reasons. When you see a picture of it you say, "Oh shit! It's that heinous building in Brookline Village!"

So much talk about a building people have been talking about for 20 years now. So ... the addition? Where do we stand on that?

Does anyone know why they decided to just forget the style already there? I kind of liked it. A bit different from everything else, now it's just this pile of horizontal window panels we see everywhere.

Wait, really? That's f*cking stupid, the precedent wasn't even that bold or threatening or anything.
