GrandMarc Residence Hall (YMCA) @ Northeastern U | 291 St. Botolph Street | Fenway

Thanks Derek. So it essentially is a ballroom of sorts. There's a coat check, catering kitchen and bathrooms. Great event space overlooking the city!

kz, are these from today? I might have just missed you if that was the case.

Hey yeah those are from "today." I walked through a little after 5. If you see a dude with a big old Canon zoom lens then you've spotted me!

You're welcome Tim. (LOL, I don't even care anymore)

A little old, 4 of the large window panes on the top row are now installed.

Some of the silver panels have gone up on the SW corner of the site, but they are still covered up. The facade anchoring system is making its way around the building, so I would expect the rest of the panels to go in soon.

To be honest, the massing of the building has grown on me. But the materials really drag down something that could have at least been passable. I am hoping that the silver panels distract from the orange panels but I am not confident.

That is how many of the tower dorms on Northeastern are named being I'm not a student there I don't know why but I do recall the Honors Dorms being called International Village and it was one building.

How can one building be a village?

Better yet, why would you want to publicize this P.O.S. in your design portfolio?

What happened to GrandMarc?

Anyway, this is the first building for their planned "East Village". When they get around to it, what is now Cullinane Hall across the street will be redeveloped into another East Village building.

i think we knew it was gonna be called east village for a while... but i am still disappointed by NU's lack of imagination. "east village" is not a building name where people will automatically say, "Oh yeah that's Northeastern" upon hearing it. Though i suppose if, in the future, NU starts naming every single building into a something-village, then it will be a Northeastern-only thing.

The villages moniker is mainly a placeholder until donors' names can be given to buildings. For instance, West Village is made up of eight buildings, 7 of which are called "West Village A, B, C.." etc. The Behrakis Health Sciences Center is West Village D, but after a handsome donation to the Bouve College Health Sciences the school renamed the building after George Behrakis.

Even if they do eventually rename all the buildings after donors, I like the village designations. It does an enormous service to the campus to make it feel more like a neighborhood or a community, and frankly their design is very village-like to begin with.
